He’s not socialist he’s social democratic (center-left).
Portuguese here. The headline is misleading on multiple levels. The PS (Partido Socialista) is really a center-left social democratic party despite the name – similar to how the SPD works in Germany. They’re not radical left by any stretch. Also worth noting that the Portuguese presidency is largely a ceremonial role – the real power sits with the PM and parliament. The president can veto laws and dissolve parliament but mostly acts as a moderating figure. That said, the fact that Ventura (Chega) even polls this high is the real story for anyone watching Portuguese politics. Five years ago Chega barely existed, now they’re the main opposition force. The immigration debate and cost of living crisis shifted the political landscape dramatically.
Polls aren’t results, but it’s refreshing to see voters choosing boring stability over loud extremism. Sometimes not insane really is the winning platform.
People will be surprised
Looking at polls this guy is consistently beating the Chega leader by ~30 points so…
Let’s see if anyone votes on Sunday with this weather
People may have lost hope in politicians, but the majority still didn’t lose their minds. Ventura is a populist with no interest in portuguese people and has gone as far as to say that Portugal needed 3 Salazars (1 went great, as we are still dealing with the damage he caused). We’ll be fine for now, though I can’t vouch for the future unless we start having politicians that actually listen to people and focus on improving existing problems.
It’s just another battle. Fascism is far from defeated. Unfortunately.
And of course, nobody talks about it in France.
the far right is all pedos under putin’s and bb’s blackmail handbook
