This should go to an EU referendum in each country. This is way to complicated to expedited without the will of the people.

Personally I also disagree with this. Start an economical cooperation first but no EU entrance. Next step, if all has been cleaned from corruption and implementation of EU rules , they can join without voting rights. After 5 or so years they can get voting rights. I don’t think we want another Hungary in the EU.

Hungary is a failed state as long as Orban is in office.

  4. A stopped clock is right twice a day, and on this occasion… The EU runs the risk of creating *another* Hungary if it fast-tracks Ukraine into the EU; it’s decades away from meeting EU accession standards on corruption, treatment of minorities, human rights, and does not exactly have a stellar track record on democracy either; there’s no guarantee that the EU will be as enamoured of whoever is in charge in 5 or 10 years time as they are right now, and if the fundamental constitutional and civil structures are not in place we will just have an even less constrained Orban on our hands.

The only way fast-tracking Ukraine makes sense is if it comes together with the elimination of national vetoes, and with a mechanism in place to kick states out as well as letting them in.

Which is something Orban really should be scared of…

This place is full of teenagers. I bet they first heard a country named Ukraine exists when the war started 4 years ago.

They have no idea how corrupted it is.

Well, that will be a great message to all the other candidates…

Ukraine has been in the midst of corruption scandals during the whole war. Heck, it was the second most corrupt country in Europe only behind Russia before.

I’m totally pro Ukraine and want that we take more direct steps in their support. But letting them join the EU without fixing the problems thoroughly would be unfair to the countries that are in process of joining. Also it would be shortsighted to let such things pass.

Why would Ukraine join the EU? Maybe I don’t have the whole picture but in the news it’s made to look like “join the EU to feel more safer”. If this is the motivation it’s obviously a ticking time bomb.

    Maybe some other insights?

This is so dumb, Ukraine is not even close to be ready. I hope reason will win.

I don’t think this is a good idea. EU membership should be strictly conditional

  11. >In practice, the initiative would involve fast-tracking Ukraine’s technical preparation for accession, granting it a **form of partial EU membership without the full privileges** provided to member states

Yeah, bring in the most corrupt country asap. That will work out well

How predictable that Hungary is being brought into the debate in order to hide the fact that Ukraine meets hardly any of the criteria for EU accession. But if Hungary is against it…

Well, If was Montenegrin/Serbian/Albanian I would be pissed too…

Sounds rushed, shortsighted, and harmful to everyone involved.

All Balkan countries jumping trough hoops for the last 20 years….

So all wee needed is to make a war…

  17. Thread is full contradictions. People claim accepting Ukraine creates a risk of accepting “another Hungary” while claiming that Hungary is actually correct on this one. Which means Ukraine will be a good addition to EU.
Also, stop comparing Ukraine to Hungary. Hungary is not fighting a genocidal war against russia.

  18. What’s all the fuss about? If membership (according to the article) is limited and purely nominal, how will that help Ukraine or the EU? Especially during a war. Achievement?

  19. qwerty_1965 on

I’m certain that the only reason Hungary is not under pressure to be booted out is because of the fear it would immediately become Southern Belarus outside the EU

What would happen if Ukraine get annexed to Russia? Would we have EU Russia?
