Switzerland will hold a vote on a radical proposal to cap the country’s population at 10mn people, a move that could threaten crucial agreements with the EU and limit companies’ access to skilled foreign workers.
Backed by the powerful right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) and will be voted on in mid-June, the initiative seeks to limit Switzerland’s permanent resident population to no more than 10mn people before 2050, and to trigger measures if the population exceeds 9.5mn before then. These would include limiting numbers in the areas of asylum and family reunification.
The country’s current population is 9.1mn people and Switzerland has a high level of immigration, as people are drawn by its high wages and quality of life. It has one of the largest proportions of foreign residents in Europe, at 27% according to official figures, and its population has grown some 25% since 2000, much higher than most neighbouring countries.
And what happens when the demographic bulge gets old and there’s no young workers coming in?
Also what happens if when the population hits 10 million and a child is born to make it 10,000,001? Do they kick out the most recent immigrant? 😉

They can vote but they should know the consequence, EU-Swiss accords are many, but they are all tied by guillotine clauses. So this can create issues.

It is very unlikely that a proper calculation of the country’s capacity limit would fall on a number so round. Its abritrariness shows this is more about virtue signaling rather than addressing an actual issue.

Hatred towards foreigners is ramping up again. Havent we learned anything????
The fact that people downvote calling out racism tells me more than enough: no, we haven’t learning a damn thing.

This is one of the most stupid proposals I have ever heard and I am talking as a beneficiary since my property is 1km away from the swiss border

Overrun by qualified people, education paid by their neighbouring countries, and Switzerland goes, nah, we are too well off without you, just send our banks your money.

And what are they gonna do ? Euthanize every newborn to not exceed the 10 million inhabitants threshold if it is reached one day ?

Just to clarify, It’s not a hard cap, it should not be over 10millions before 2050. It’s to slow down immigration that exploded in the last 20years.
Demographics says that population will decline anyway. And it doesn’t provide any solutions how to pay for retirement or even taxes with an old declining population. But old people will vote for it anyway.

This kills free movement with the EU and therefore the whole trade agreement
Swiss here. I did not read all the material for the voting yet. This is obviously an initiative by the right wing party, they are captured by industrialiats though and only LARP as a populist right wing party.
The law is worded in a way that will let them still higher foreigners, but they don’t get any permanent residence and hence much worse protection. I think that is the real goal, to make it easier to exploit migrant workers, which will obviously also impact swiss workers.
I hope it gets rejected, but apparently it looks like it has a chance to pass.
