Ciao a tutti,

  1. “Bayati” is the name of the “makam” (corrresponding to musical mode in the west). “Ayin” (or “mevlevi ayini”) is the name of the form, which is the longest and most complex of the musical forms in turkish classical music. It is the music of the Mevlevi religious order.

This form is always composed of 1 peşrev (instrumental introduction) and 4 “selam”s (the main body with mostly persian lyrics taken from Rumi’s poems). Apart from these, it is often introduced with a “taksim” (improvisational instrumental piece) and finished with “son peşrev” (final peşrev) and “son yürüksemai” (a final lively instrumental piece).

Many examples of this form is available online if you search youtube with the term “mevlevi ayini”, you can check the excellent recordings from Nevzat Atlığ. Bayati mevlevi ayini is afaik the oldest surviving example of the form.
