wait a bit, soon some redditors will say: “but air superiority…”

there was period when russia was dropping dozens of heavy 500 kg bombs each day on Ukrainian positions. And Ukrainians managed not to collapse during such conditions. Before say about “air superiority”, check your stocks, if you have even 5% of what russia dropped and continue dropping on Ukrainians. Sadly, many Europeans have falled to self-deception …

Reading what is available it seems a major factor was it being a high friction environment.  This makes sense.  The constraints of the war game still allowed the NATO forces to move pretty freely but what we are seeing here seems to be a situation akin to the Korean war, where UN forces failed to adapt swiftly to PLA light infantry infiltration and were pushed back from the Chinese border.  The Ukrainian forces were able to utilize the high friction environment to insert drones for recon.  The individual drone strikes themselves were a bit more damaging than they probably should have been, which makes me assume that this was trying to beat in lessons as the NATO forces weren’t operating as they should in the environment.

The flaws make sense.  The kind of drones we are seeing a lot of are being employed with light infantry making infiltration pretty far forward possible and pinning them down more difficult.  Drones can be pre-positioned well ahead of a unit and then the unit can move up to begin using the drones.  NATO air defense units have a bad tendency to be undertrained and under prepared, particularly close in defense units.  They are expensive to maintain and train without a lot of recent use.  This is part of why German air defense has so many gaps still as they keep looking into more systems to procure to rectify that.  Most NATO units are not used to a high tempo high friction environment.  Some units may be used to lower tempo high friction COIN operations and a handful of expeditionary units will be ready for high tempo operations.

Drones are not an end all weapon, they still rely on the light infantry infiltration.  If NATO can move quickly and overrun the Russian forces that attack it would negate any close in drones and reduce friction.  With Russia likely to have the initiative as the invader though that would rely on a quick response with a large force by European forces.

I think people should really think more and stop using Russia being clogged in Ukraine as some kind of gotcha to claim that Russia is so weak that even if Ukraine fell it would be no threat to Europe. The country that stands on top of this conflict will have years of experience using drone warfare, a kind of war that NATO is not prepared for. You are not stopping infiltrations and drones with air superiority.

We need to support Ukraine till the end, they are our line of defense.
