The local municipality was paid off to demolish this [stunning building last year in Nicosia](https://dom.com.cy/en/live/digest/an-architectural-object-from-the-1930s-was-demolished-in-nicosia/). If anything, the case you posted about is not as bad because at least the local council tried to stop it rather than facilitate it.
