I would bet that they only really need to disable the optics of current quadcopter drones because that’s the way they’re all currently controlled. That would require much less power than lighting the drone on fire/damaging the electronics, etc… And even if you don’t succeed in damaging the optics, using the laser as a [dazzler](https://www.twz.com/land/laser-dazzlers-for-defending-tanks-against-marauding-drones-are-an-untapped-countermeasure) could easily disrupt attacks and lead to the loss of the quadcopter because it’s flown into the ground, trees, buildings, etc… due to a brief disruption of operator vision and the high speed, high maneuvering of the drone.

The same device could be used for targeting things for other weapons systems as well and possibly for things like communications, etc…
