> Ukraine wants 2027 membership date as part of peace deal
> Kallas (European Union Foreign Policy Chief) says a lot of work still needed
> Latvian president plays down peace deal prospects
MUNICH, Feb 15 (Reuters) – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Sunday she felt that EU governments were not ready to give Ukraine a date for membership despite a demand to do so from President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Zelenskiy repeated on Saturday that he needed a date as part of security guarantees for a final peace package with Russia.
“My feeling is that the member states are not ready to give a concrete date,” Kallas told a panel at the Munich Security Conference. “There’s a lot of work to be done.”
How this irritates me. I understand raising this stuff at a national forum, since after all, he’s a politician, but doing so on an international forum suggests that he’s just entitled. The fact that Russia invaded Ukraine is unfortunate, but it doesn’t mean that the entire European Project should be sabotaged. The rules should be the same for everyone, or the entire thing collapses
Well, for starters the war needs to stop.
If you are in EU and you are at war, the other countries must declare war as well. Supporting financially is one thing. Going to war against a nuclear power requires a bit more consideration.
It is also a lesson to those that are not in EU. Plenty could join but find it a bit incovenient or want their own full sovereignty. It is a bit unfair toward the current members only to seek joining EU when you are at war.
That said, I am sure that Ukraine would be invited once the war is over and a peace settlement is in place. That and better gov from Hungary. Since Orban would simply kill any proposal for Ukraine to join. Any new members in EU require unanimity.
A set date so that Ukraine automatically becomes a member even if it doesn’t meet the requirements. Sounds like a great incentive to meet them.
Why would a date on Ukrainian EU membership be a part of a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia?
How can a date even be given on something that demands certain requirements to be fulfilled?
I mean, it’s a bit of a conundrum that zelensky needs to understand.
He’s pressuring to have a specific date for membership as part of security guarantees and yet the EU obviously can’t give a specific date if the war is still ongoing.
He’s getting security guarantees regardless and the EU is in the process of reforming it’s processes for Ukraine. Shouting around about countries “not ready to decide a date” is nonsensical, does he not understand how the EU works?
EU is with Ukraine, these are details. Why focus on this detail from the EU when USA cut all aid and sides with Putin all the time?

Should Ukraine join the EU? yes.
Should Ukraine set the terms? No.
Zelensky needs to be realistic and admit that Ukraine is not ready for full membership yet.
Well Zelenskyy should understand that EU membership is not a clear timeline or a clear date, not even Montenegro, who is poised to become the next member of the EU, has a clear date
Considering that Ukraine is still at war with Russia and there’s a whole other number of steps such as reconstruction and other reforms that have to be taken after a potential peace (whenever that comes), I’d say EU membership for Ukraine is still a long way to go
Doesn’t seem fair that nations like Hungary, Turkey and Slovakia with the most corrupt governments are part of the E.U. and the bravest world leader in our times, Zelenskyy is told to “hold please”.
Realistically speaking no one can give an exact date for it. With the way the existing EU is structured, the roadmap for Ukraine is somewhere in the order of 10 to 15 years long. The only way for Ukraine to join a bit faster in certain areas is to have a multi-tier EU where we may have a new “semi-member” status. Full membership though will be a lengthy journey for Ukraine.
let’s ignore the war for a second, there is still whole whole corruption and human rights issue
Accession process depends on both sides. The speed really is determined by how quickly Ukraine adapts, that’s nothing the EU can tell at this point.
Why is EU membership a point for peace deal? It looks like Ukraine won’t sign the deal until EU lets them in, making it look like they are the one who are prolonging this war.
