    >”Whether you are right on the ‘zero point’ of the frontline, or 30 or even 80 kilometres back, there is no guarantee that you’re safe,” the soldier says, explaining that Russian drones overhead are a constant threat.

    >”That means stress, and this [can have] an impact: your reproductive ability declines. So we have to think about the future and the future of our Ukrainian nation.”

    >Private fertility clinics began offering what’s known as cryopreservation to servicemen and women in 2022 at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

    >They could freeze their sperm or eggs for free in case they were injured in action or their fertility was affected.

    >The following year parliament stepped in to regulate the practice and provide state funding.

    >”Our soldiers are defending our future, but may lose their own, so we wanted to give them that chance,” is how MP Oksana Dmitrieva describes the law she helped draft.

    >”It’s to support them, so they can use their sperm later.”

Go young men, die for your country…but first freeze your sperm, we need younger people in case of another war

Is this because the war is going so well for them?

Every defender of the male only draft uses the argument that women have to reproduce to save population decline, so I guess this is exactly what they want.

Nobody is going to give birth using any of these frozen sperm. Ukrainian women are leaving the country in search of greener pastures.

Nice service for those who want it, but I doubt most future ukrainians will be from frozen sperm. Women will mostly just put off having kids until the war ends or move to a country that is more safe for kids.

What catastrophe, their population is in tens of millions, compared to half of other European countries with a population less than 5 million.

  8. Afaik Ukraine had highest emigration rates in Europe already *before* the war.

Likely most of the war refugees aren’t coming back either after the war, can’t really blame them either.

Sperm is never in short supply, how does this help? A single man could provide sperm for thousands of women. The problem is all the women leaving ukraine since that is the upper limit on how many children are born. Never has a lack of sperm been the cause for decline.

    >Ukraine is paying for troops to freeze their sperm

Awesome! All this sperm + all the Ukrainian women are going to repopulate the country once the war is done!

Oh, wait! Ukrainian women have been fleeing to richer countries since before the war started without anyone stopping them, so I guess they’ll just… ask them to leave their new rich husband and come back?
