The council knows they can just not pay and drive away right?

Yes that will deescalate tensions between van dwellers and the surrounding residents.

this is the best compromise imo – just need to do the same to traveller sites now!

    Fair.

So can eligable van dwellers claim housing benefit etc?

About bloody time too. When an economy is doing well people will tolerate a certain amount of freeloading, in times like we’re in now everyone needs to be paying up.

Driving across the Downs a few days ago (weekend), I didn’t see much sign of people living in the caravans. No chimney smoke, no lights, the steps tucked under the vehicle. Just an observation, could have been at work.

  7. This is to apply to the council run pitches called ‘meanwhile’ sites. The places the council are trying to open to get vans off the streets.

I get they cost money to operate, but they were already charging for them.

Won’t most van dwellers look at how much meanwhile sites cost now and be like ‘fuck that I’ll stay put on this residential street, I know several more if they move me on’.

Edit: just looked it up and band A in Bristol is about £120 a month, vast majority of van dwellers live alone so that’s really £90 with single person discount. The meanwhile sites are already £140 a month, so essentially a council pitch in Bristol is now £230 a month, still well within what can be claimed in housing costs from universal credit.

Again this can only apply to people living on pitches, council or not, so some might still avoid pitches if they don’t need or want one.

Hmm, sounds like the greens need to solve the housing crisis in bristol rather than listen to whining nimbies then?

Imagine living somewhere that was a superpower 100 years ago and now has a growing shanty town issue…

Surely they can set a piece of land aside and make it a decent enough place with ablution and charge accordingly and make it illegal to say on the side of the road.

It’s the Valuation Office Agency that decides whether a dwelling is banded for council tax, and local authorities have a duty to advise the VOA of any dwellings that should be brought into the council tax list. So basically dwellings liable for council tax will now be charged council tax, not much of a story there though I suppose.
