66% back lower taxes for better services at a higher quality with less waste
Equivalent_Bet856 on
Interesting headline. 35% said taxes were too high, 25% dont want them change, yet they lead with this? I support higher taxes for better services but the public, it seems, does not.
Even the comment carried in the article say this is support for an enhanced welfare state.
Is this bias?

We don’t get anywhere near the services we should get with the amount of tax we pay. Public transport is a joke, as is public health care. I can’t drink tap water where I’m from. Can’t think of anything else right now but I’m sure there’s plenty more. As far as I can see, most of us are only paying tax to keep a government running that’s full of corruption and giving stupid expensive sets of golf clubs to a large orange pedophile from America.

Aside from anything else.
I am generally for higher taxes and better services.
The thing is fucking everything is privatised. We have an economy raj for private CEOs and their wishes beat the publics at every turn. Higher taxes wouldn’t mean hmbrtter services it would mean higher bonus for the wealthy shareholders. Tax them or reorganise into an economy that actually invests in our society and infrastructure.

That’s probably because almost as many people pay effectively zero income tax. If you’re earning above the average wage, however, you’re paying a lot indeed.

Better services? I’d be happy with services being provided in the first place because they are not there! And until you need the specific services we don’t have, you’re pretty unaware of it.

No thanks.
Pay enough already, how about we do a lil efficiency run first.
Dazzling_Delivery118 on
I kinda think no thanks if it’s broad and fungible.
We don’t have a great record for public spending and we spend a lot already. We spend billions a year on many neevr ending systems that were supposedly short term and only serve to enrich private individuals.
If it’s ring fenced for infrastructure or education (certain subjects) I’d be all for it.

What services are we talking about here? Bins are private, can’t get a medical card, gas/heating is private.
Road maintenance is actually pretty good compared to most countries and with the m50 at capacity and them still charging the tolls they should be able to afford to fill the countries potholes twice over.

I’d love if they got rid of the USC. it was an austerity measure and that’s long over. There is no need for all the surpluses every year

Odd headline given 35% believe taxes are too high.
As for those who say they’d like to see them go up…. All good until you ask them about specific tax measures. That’s where the rubber meets the road. Usually these surveys actually get “raise taxes… you know, on… <waves indistinctly> that lot”

The whole problem is that the vast majority of our taxes go on Committee discussions… groups… research… tribunals. This is all part of the outrageous waste. This is what we see…horrible stories about disability services…. health services… overrun on spending in every infrastructure project…
The social media ban is such a waste of time and energy… everyone’s concern is “how will this work?”… who cares, make it illegal, let the companies figure out how it works and punish them harshly for non compliance.

I back the erasure of private sector jobs that undermine the public services, which in turn create an inflationary spiral in which I have to pay more in taxes for a continuous worse public service. Start there and then I’ll pay double the taxes.

This is a terrible idea. It will just result in higher taxes for the same defunct services. We already have huge public spending and huge wastage of that spending. What gives anyone the impression that giving the government more money will improve their piss poor management, incompetence and delivery of service ?
I’d rather spend that extra money that will be taxed on private services that actually deliver what they are supposed to do. The government should try to optimize the public service and cut out bloat, wastage and overspend before taxing us higher.
The headline should read 66% don’t back higher taxes for the likely empty promise of improved services.
SpinningVinylAgain on
Ireland already has one of the most oppressive tax regimes in the world as things stand (for individuals, not corporations), but where are the services? For example, almost every country in the civilized world has free childcare run by local authorities, here people have to pay through their noses. Public transport is horrible so you have to have a car (which is also heavily taxed), public healthcare is in shambles so you have to pay for private health insurance if you want to be seen by a consultant in a reasonable time, etc. So what exactly are our taxes being spent on if we have to pay for basic things ourselves?
Let’s improve the services first and then think about raising additional tax revenue (and even then I believe they should go for broadening of the tax base by taxing low earners more, and leave middle earners alone).

I would too if there were ever a hope in hell that FFG would actually use increased tax revenue to provide better services. I think we all know the subtext there is, at best, “better services for people living in wealthier parts of Dublin” and at worst “massive funding for feasibility projects done by friends of ours that will ultimately lead to nothing”.

mother_a_god on
The tax vs services equation has not worked so far in Ireland, so more tax is not that answer to more services.
Id actually back this is first they demonstrated the ability to get something for the tax were currently paying, and then have a clear “now if we raise x well get y”.
Not that the US is a great example these days, I do recall about 20 year ago while on a roadfrip taking a nice tourist boat tour in downtown Amarilo, where the operator said the downtown was very run down and had no transport, so they put it to a vote to raise the local sales tax by 1% for x years to revamp it. They did and it was beautiful and they removed the 1% when done.
Thats the kind of thing I can get behind. Not the USC is a temporary measure…oh no it’s not, and you get nothing for it either
