18 month driving ban. The idea that this person can ever legally get behind a wheel is insane. At the very least take away their drving licence and make them do a driving test if they want it back.
Edit: I missed in the article that she will have to retake. So fair enough.
You’d probably have to smash your way into a judge’s home at Christmas and mow down all their friends, family and relations before they’d even consider giving anyone a lifetime driving ban

It’s a joke of a sentence for the death.
The driving ban is even more of a joke – they **didn’t see** some right at the front of their car, that has to be a lifetime ban from driving at that point, they aren’t safe to be in a car.
Say all the facts are exactly the same but the driver was in their 20s, would we see a 12 month ban and suspended sentence ? Doubt it.
This is clearly a sign of a judge who thinks being old is an excuse for gross negligence.
What a sad read, I do really feel for the victims family. May Sandra Cooper rest in peace.
I hope something good to raise awareness and possibly action to safeguard elderly drivers and others comes out of this.
I have been of the thought for a while that seniors should have to, as mandatory, re-take their driving test at a certain age i.e post state pension receiving age where most are retired.
Appreciate something like this is very subjective as can see a lot of points why it’s not feasible or practical but can’t help but feel something like this could have been prevented through this approach.
As an additional point, as many others have pointed out, my gut feeling the court sentence given doesn’t really seem fit for justice for the nature of what happened. It’s easy to point the blame at the accused but should Isobel Dunlop even have been allowed to drive when naturally your sense become impaired as individuals age?

There are way too many older drivers on the road who become a danger before they realise it. Happened to people in my own family.
Some sort of stricter check after a certain age would save lives.
Licenses should be removed between 60/70, old people are the worst drivers on the road

It also adds a bit of context to the sentence; an 18-month driving ban. If she stopped driving after the crime she’s already been off the road for 50 months. A 12-month prison sentence suspended for 2 years which has effectively already been suspended for 4 years.
We really need to sort out our criminal justice systems.
Story time:
About 10 years ago, I was walking on the pavement with my kid in who was sat in a little scooter. A car came speeding around the corner, bounced off a car in the opposite lane, then crashed into the railings about 10 feet in front of us. We were terrified.
It was a much older driver who couldn’t remember the last 5 minutes. The driver of the car he bounced off of was furious, because it was written off. The older driver kept claiming he couldn’t remember anything.
Two weeks later, I see the older driver in one of those super buggy things with a shelter over the top, speeding around on the road and pavement, nearly taking out other pedestrians.
There needs to be better rules for older people and vehicles.
She’s 84. Why give a sentence? Why not reeducate and help the lady. Pretty clearly has issues with driving. She’s not some career criminal.

Elderly person in a car killed someone loading their shopping in a car park not that far from me the other day.
It is madness that these people aren’t made to retake tests etc at their advanced age (and I mean, *before* they get behind the wheel and kill someone)
Young driver hits and *injures* person playing rugby in a carpark: 18 months prison and banned her from driving for two years and nine months.
Old driver hits and *kills* someone in a carpark: Suspended sentence for 12 months.
One kills and gets basically let off scott free and the other injures someone and gets 18 months.
Why?!?!
Absolutely staggering that she is allowed to get back behind the wheel again when she will be even older!

I don’t care if they’re 84. Even more reason to make sure they don’t drive.
