      Some councils pay a fee to some businesses to provide a toilet with public access but they don’t advertise them sufficiently. I once worked at a business that would have dozens of members of the public use their toilets daily, yet there was another business opposite that was paid the sum to provide public access, yet nobody knew and wouldn’t go there..

      Westerners are so allergic to providing good services like even though a small gesture like visiting a café could increase visibility and leave a lasting impression for future visits

      I’d never just walk into some independent cafe for the loo’s and not even buy something small.

      chains like McDonald’s tho not a problem

      Bloody self-entitled freeloaders, I swear it has got worse, help out the cafe owner and just buy a fucking packet of crisps or a cake or can of coke, toilets cost money to provide!

      I’ve needed the loo on the way home from the pub on many an occassion and I’ve used pub toilets and I’ve **always** bought something whether it’s another pint or a coke.

      I’m sure it’s infuriating but the anger should be directed at councils that can’t operate public facilities, it’s disgraceful that civilised areas have people running out of options to relieve themselves with dignity

      Why does our supposedly modern, First World country have such few public toilets? and why are most of the few public toilets that we have covered in grafitti, vandalised, deliberately soiled & not open when needed?

      Being in central London with a pregnant wife was a nightmare, public toilets are nearly never sign posted and so hard to find. Also you need to pay in many places though I understand they probably do that to keep it from being a drug den but there’s a lot of homeless or mentally unwell people and I’ve seen them defecating in the street.

      I’d rather go for a system of paid toilets like they often have in mainland Europe, at least you know they are always clean

      Look, if your little cafe toilet is looking like a nightclub toilet and it’s affecting your customers experience I understand, but this is just another example of society collectively losing their fucking minds.

      Let people go to the fucking toilet if they need it. Making a big deal about it will have a bigger negative impact on most people’s businesses than just letting them use the fucking toilet.

      It’s a shame because it is a nice cafe and Sarah has her name on other small places like Sarah’s Burgers near the bus station (I’m assuming it is the same Sarah) that someone else runs, so she puts a lot of effort into providing food as an independent business and yeah I can very easily sympathise with drawing a line when someone walks in with a starbucks cup just to use the loo. Especially when the library (open most days) and the market (every day except monday) are within a couple minute walk.

      Her local council won’t do anything to help.

      But they will be down on her like a tonne of bricks now to investigate whether there is overflow between the footfall of the toilets and hygiene of the cafe.

      In central London, the major chains like Starbucks stink of the toilet if you sit at the tables on the path to the toilet. 

      Homeless people seem to live in cafe toilets and smoke in there.

      I have seen commuters slipping into the toilets together for a bit of double cream

      Whenever I need to use the toilet in a cafe
      I feel like I’m going to be hospitalised.

      But we really don’t want the return of public toilets like a lot of people are saying in this thread. They are probably too young to remember how dodgy public toilets were and how much they stank

      I always make a small purchase, maybe a biscuit or a bottle of water or something. Just waltzing in is uncivilised.

      I remember years ago I was out walking and I had a sudden really bad pain. I went into a cafe and dropped the worst dump of my life and didn’t buy anything. Always felt bad about it.

      The parish council closed the public conveniences (building converted to business premises and rented out) and on their website suggest using the toilet at the nearest Tescos.

      I think this is cheeky.

      Free public toilets needed. Essential for communities and tourism. Especially in Highlands etc.

      What if I had a coffee there previously and didn’t use the toilet in that occasion, surely I am owed one.

      On a serious not, just because someone is not a customer when they use the toilet, they may become one because they were allowed to use the loo.

      Part of the reason businesses are reluctant to let people use their bathrooms is the same reason councils don’t provide more of them; people don’t treat them with respect.

      I can’t believe the conditions the toilets are in when I go to use them at a restaurant, shopping center or elsewhere that isn’t my own at home. People piss on the floor, on the seats, and toilet paper is strewn everywhere, they don’t flush.

      The two key takeaways here are:

      1) Not enough public toilets

      2) A not-insignificant portion of the population love to vent their frustration and abuse someone who isn’t responsible for the situation

      Both are big problems throughout the country.

      I remember when Costa put a keypad on the toilet door that required you to have a receipt.

      I feel that would really be the only way to reinforce that.

      I know people who just walk straight into the local boozer for the toilet and then out. I couldn’t do that without at least buying something

      But I also feel in certain areas this is an accessibility problem of a lack of public toilets, or at least a lack of toilets in public buildings where this wouldn’t be frowned upon, unlike a private business.

      For some areas, I get why. My local park had the toilets closed and then repurposed because they were very unclean, used for drugs, used for casual sex. The building was renovated and repurposed (though sits vacant atm, since Covid killed the cafe that opened there). But that is now a park without a lav.

      If you’re caught short, and there’s nothing around, what other choice would you have other than to try and hold it in hope of either getting somewhere first, having the charity of others, or finding somewhere very discreet, trying to be a respectful at least as possible by idk… against a tree or a drain, and hoping you don’t get collared.
