Social tenants in a new Dublin apartment complex are saying they’re blocked from using the gym, sauna and cinema room — despite living in the same building as private renters.
The developer says those amenities are “for paying residents only,” while tenants argue it’s basically segregation in all but name.
Is this a case of people feeling entitled to extras they didn’t pay for, or is it a two‑tier housing system being baked into new developments?
What do ye think entitlement or segregation?
I think it would be unfair to allow them to use amenities everyone else has to pay for, especially when everyone else also pays crazy rents.
A happy compromise could be that social tenants pay an access fee for such amenities? Similar to how they would pay for electricity, or access to a gym outside the apartment..
It’s not segregation. They feel entitled to it but there’s no reason why
Beggars can’t be choosers
The alternative headline in lala land : “Dublin city Council shells out for saunas, cinema and gym membership for social tenants as thousands sit on waiting list”
This is a nothing issue.
The person quoted probably wouldn’t have taken the extremely discounted accommodation had they known in advance they wouldn’t have access to the sauna. In fact, nobody in their right mind would! /s
Why are they not on to the council that houses them?
Part V tenants cause mayhem in my estate and many others. Segregation is not going nearly far enough.
Total brass neck expecting access to facilities they are mooching off
Can’t have the filth in our presence

I would be embarrassed if I was in this building paying council rates and this story broke.
I think this is a case where the developer should be allowed to buy and handover or build their social commitment somewhere else. Otherwise, allow the social tenants to pay for the access.
Two tier residency is just going to create animosity and I’d feel sorry for kids that just won’t understand why they’re excluded. on the other hand, the other residents are paying handsomely for the access I’m sure, so it would sting that others get it for free.
Living 10 minutes away from Stephens Green for €60 a week wasn’t good enough. Tired of this.
Social housing is a scarce public resource. Why would anyone ever want to strive to get off social housing if they were getting “gym, the sauna, the internet, the library room, the cinema room” for free or a discount? This type of luxury incentivises people and their offspring to see social housing as something intended for life. Social housing should not incentivise long-term dependence because it is intended as a temporary safety net.
Permanent reliance on subsidised housing shifts social housing away from its core mission. Rather than acting as a transitional support, it risks becoming a parallel housing market detached from need-based allocation.
Also, in – Im sure – unrelated news… [https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/dublin-man-held-on-e400-cash-bail-after-glock-handgun-and-ammo-seizure-1813212.html](https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/dublin-man-held-on-e400-cash-bail-after-glock-handgun-and-ammo-seizure-1813212.html)
This is unreal. Segregation would be putting them in ACTUAL social housing like the old days and then letting them buy out the freehold for a pittance so they could sell the house on the open market and make a fortune. Currently there is a Council House for sake in Glasthule in Dublin for 1.1 million.
If they want to use them, pay the fee as those amenities have to be maintained and its hard for the council on a limited budget to justify paying for that.
Some people are unbelievable. I know a girl, degree educated with a strong work history, currently living in a family hub with 2 very small boys after eventually getting out of a violent relationship who would be delighted to be offered any property. Then you have the likes of these giving social tenants a bad name with their greed. The difference is this girl carries (wrongly) shame for ending up in this situation and is grateful for any and all help she can get whereas there are a group of Irish people who feel entitled to be looked after by the state and see absolutely nothing wrong with demanding access to a cinema room and sauna in their “forever home”
Entitled fucking moochers. Be grateful for your free apartment. Vote Sinn Fein/soc dems and the moochers will live like kings while workers will be taxed more
Next they’ll complain they can’t use the car park because they haven’t been given a council car to keep up with what other tenants are paying for.
Maybe instead of complaining, they should try paying for it
