    > The officer responsible for running the by-election rejected the claims, saying no reports of family voting had been made by polling station staff.

    >A spokesperson for the Acting Returning Officer said: “Polling station staff are trained to look out for any evidence of undue influence on voters.
“No such issues have been reported today.

    >”If Democracy Volunteers were so concerned about alleged issues they could and should have raised them with us during polling hours so that immediate action could be taken.

    >”We have operated a central by-election hub which has been rapidly responding to reported issues during the day, in liaison with the police – who had a presence at every polling station – where necessary.

    >”It is extremely disappointing that Democracy Volunteers have waited until after polls have closed to make such claims.”

I’ll admit, the original edit of this comment implicated reform, but according to the article Labour have latched onto it as well.

Sour grapes come in purple, who’d have thought..

    >”In the other recent Westminster parliamentary by-election in Runcorn and Helsby we saw family voting in 12% of polling stations, affecting 1% of voters.

    >”In Gorton and Denton, we observed family voting in 68% of polling stations, affecting 12% of those voters observed.”

    >The group said four observers attended 22 of the 45 polling stations in the constituency, spending 30 to 45 minutes in each.

    >Of the 22 polling stations observed, volunteers reported potential family voting in 15.

    >They observed a sample of 545 individuals casting their vote and saw 32 cases of family voting in total, including nine cases in one polling station.

If I walk to the polling station with my partner and adult children while white that is all nice and traditional. If I do it while brown that’s ‘family voting’ and should be distrusted.

    From the article:

“However, the by-election’s acting returning officer said polling station staff were trained to look for undue influence on voters and **”no such issues” had been reported during polling hours.**”

The mainstream establishment who love Reform/Labour/Tories are now quaking in their boots that a real progressive party can win decisive elections in safe seats and will be pulling out all the stops to denigrate and diminish the Greens in any way possible.

I’m being naive I’m sure – but what’s the issue with family voting? Is it a concern about coercion?

  6. a_n_d_r_e_ on

I am really surprised that being in the polling booth with someone else is an offence only since 2023.

How was the law before the Ballot Secrecy act?

  7. majordisinterest on

Who exactly are these independent election observers ‘Democracy Volunteers’? I checked their website, the about page doesn’t seem to tell you who runs it or funds it.

“This is the one thing we didnt want to happen”.

As much as i hate to say it for the sake of of confidence in our democracy id like somebody to look into this. If there is family voting or irregularities it needs to be dealt with. If its not checked out, then your handing the Reform etc a massive amount of ammo.

Huge amounts of cope from The Sensibles this morning after another show of incompetence from the pundits and pollsters. This was an absolute walloping and none of them saw it coming.

So, Muslim husbands are forcing their wives to vote for a party headed by a gay Jewish man, because they feared their Muslim wives would vote for party which has a Muslim as its head spokesman, which has a habit of demonising Muslims as a whole… it’s these evil husbands forcing their poor wives into voting Greens over Reform?

  11. AnalThermometer on

The officer is a fool if they don’t acknowledge this happened. My own parents and grandparents did it, families do vote in blocs, and it’s always occured before the recent law change. The realpolitik side of Labour’s strategy with 16 year old votes would be to expand the voting power of these large families. They just didn’t expect them to go Green.

White couple chatting in English about the weather or what they are having for dinner tonight as they walk into the polling station – unnoticed by “independent” assessors.

Asian couple chatting in Urdu about the weather or what they are having for dinner tonight as they walk into the polling station – confering or colluding according to “independent” assessors.

  13. Maleficent-Heart2497 on

This is not a story at all, what concerns the hell out of me is that over 10,000 people felt compelled to vote Reform.

Now, i get that almost the entire Tory vote switched to Reform but even still. NIgel fucking garbage…cmon people?

Also, 47% turnout. voter apathy is a real issue as well

  14. NoTitleChamp on

Concerning? Yes but it’s very much out of MAGAs playbook to blame cheating after losing, I wouldn’t be surpised if their American money backers pitched this conspiracy months ago.

  15. Hitching-galaxy on

Look at what they raise now – this is what they are guilty of doing.

  16. CROL2100 on

And let me guess if this didn’t happen the pendulum would swing FULLY in reform’s favour? British MAGA sore loser bullshit.

Do people really think Muslim husbands are directing their wives to vote Green? The kind of Muslims that vote Green will be your Sadiq Khan type of cultural progressive and the kind to be pressuring their families will be most likely going for a Muslim independent like Yakoob (or not voting all together).

Your hyper-conservative Muslim that pressures their wife to vote the same as them is not going to go for the LGBTQ friendly party headed by a gay Jewish man.

This ‘family voting’ concern is much more likely to affect conservative white Reform families who are already going down the American Christian rabbit hole.

Trumpian politics coming to the UK, heading down the dangerous road of far right fascism

Its not a coincidence we have reform candidates threatening Civil War if they dont win, and saying Labour candidates should be shot

This is the real danger, and it needs to be stamped out

  19. Dayzed-n-Confuzed on

Of course another way to look at it is, ‘I’m not voting Labour because they lied, I’m not voting Conservative because of Covid, I’m not voting Reform because they are all loonies, who’s left?’ Maybe something along those lines. 🤷‍♂️

  20. evolveandprosper on

It’s disgraceful All those Muslims coercing their family members to vote for…<checks notes>…the party led by a gay Jew. Hang on a minute…

Too many Brits vote as told to by their Russian masters via social media.

So people are aware this is a specific and accredited independent body who have reported this.

  23. inebriatedWeasel on

I love how the Reform take is that if family voting wasn’t a thing, all these Muslims (who Reformers fucking despise) would be voting for them instead of the party ran by a gay Jewish fella, when for the last 12 months it’s Labour that Reformers have been saying are the party of the Muslim voters choice.

  24. Harmless_Drone on

They need to specify what they mean by this because I’ve seen a lot of insanely bad faith takes online stating that even talking about politics with your family is against the terms of the act as it may influence them and is therefore “family voting”.

  25. Species1139 on

They have 5 MPs the rest are there illegitimatly from the Tories. They have no mandate to say they were robbed of anything. People came together to keep them out.

No evidence was seen by any electoral official to suggest anything illegal happening

Reform are using the Trump playbook again.

They lost, I hope they continue to lose. They are nothing but a disrupters party aimed at destroying our country from within.

Next we’ll have their thugs and yobs on the street burning libraries and looting Greggs

  26. HeartyBeast on

Headline has been updated : Police say no reports of electoral offences in by-election

  27. -info-sec- on

The Greens only won because Reform wasn’t an option.

It’s like “none of the above”.

Labour would have probably got it, if they let Andy Burnham have a go..
