So the government basically did nothing to prevent this?

>Von der Leyen’s decision to see the deal enter into force on an interim basis is controversial. The European Parliament has not yet ratified the agreement. That vote would have taken place this spring and was expected to be close.
>A majority of MEPs – mostly opponents of the deal – last month voted to refer it to the European Court of Justice for a legal review, which will take a year or two. That put a pause on the ratification process.
>Rather than delay or spike the deal, that instead opened the door for the commission to apply it on a provisional basis in the meantime.
>Von der Leyen would likely never have tried that had the parliament been due to vote to ratify or reject it in the next month or two.
Well…they did the same thing with the Canadian one, and we survived, still not happy with the import of meat from South America, but them’s the breaks….

Since when did the EU switch from unanimous to majority? Definitely dodgy seeing the centralization. Free trade and travel is great but feck knows I don’t want to be in a backwater province they tend to become drastically skewed with wealth inequality and rampant with extreme poverty and oppression. Unless you speak German and come from an upper middle class background this should frighten you. So much to feckin lose

Seems undemocratic. What’s the point of our EU parliament if they just keep pushing ahead anyway?
I don’t like the way this is going.

Good news for Brazil. A bit dodgy on our end in terms of democratic mandates and checks and balances. Probably for the best overall though

another data point in the increasing trend of “democratic institutions” subverting their democracy and taking unilateral action when it suits their ends. shaking off those “democratic straitjackets”, to borrow a phrase from Mícheál Martin.
