She was the sole vote on the council to allow him to run.
Perhaps she needs to go balls to the wall and condemn Starmerism fully then, since it clearly isn’t stopping for her, Starmer made that clear in continuing the Labour must beat Reform rhetoric the day after the by-election.

I really don’t see that. How does he overcome the poor image Madelson gives Labour? How does he pull back the voters that defected to Reform? How does he overcome the Lib Dem and independent voters that chose the Greens as the anti Reform candidate for the constituency?
Electricbell20 on
I really don’t think he would have. A few labour MP lost “safe seats” at the the last election due to independents and the greens. The greens did a really good job of turning the Muslim vote with a solid stance on the Gaza situation, something Burnham couldn’t do.

I dunno. There’s probably a sliding doors universe where he stood, lost and handed Manchester over to another party, too.Â

So what? He’s the mayor of Manchester. He should complete his term and then resign to fight a parliamentary seat if that is his desire. Not leave half way through and waste millions of pounds on a completely unnecessary mayoral election.
NoTitleChamp on
Shame he decided to stand for Mayor again knowing there was less than a year till a general election. He had the opportunity to be an MP again, he didn’t take it.
Horror-Protection225 on
I honestly don’t know if he would. He could have won or taken some votes off the greens and left reform win or it could still have been a green victory. Until someone figures out how to travel to parallel universes we just won’t know…

starmer needs to so the decent thing and resign. It’s getting embarrassing now

He wouldn’t have. I wish he did though just so we’d see him lose and see her lose credibility

That was never the issue though, the issue was that Burnham winning would’ve meant a Manchester Mayoral race and potentially losing to Reform there.
Having the Mayoralty is far more important than one MP in a massive majority.

This guy could have saved the Labour Party, but Starmer quite deliberately blocked him from becoming an MP because he is weak, afraid and cares more about himself than the good of his party or his country.

He wouldn’t. He would have been seen as an opportunistic liar who abandoned his role and forced another pointless election… not sure wtf he needed to be reminded he already had a job, if he didn’t want it he shouldn’t have run.

Yes but then labour would have likely lost the machester mayor. As someone who lives in leeds him being mayor is the only hope I have in the northern trains improving

Man I’m not so sure. Burnham is popular but I think the media might be overstating his popularity a bit.

He probably would. That would 100% make things worse for Labour though with the impending leadership challenge.

i agree he would’ve won the seat. but at the same time he should just stay as mayor of manchester
penguigeddon on
He wouldn’t have won, the problems run much deeper than a last minute candidate, even of Burnham’s status being drafted in to save the seat when his actual intentions were obvious. Sure they would have probably pipped reform to second, but the people there voted for the one local representative that actually seemed to care about the constituency
Impressive-Bird-6085 on
Well why on earth did Starmer, his leadership team, Morgan McSweeney (now most thankfully departed from No.10) and the Labour Party NEC ‘spike their own guns’ so to speak? By allowing Burnham to stand, and likely win the in Gorton and Denton by-election, the Green Party would have been denied the political and electoral momentum they have now secured by winning the seat. Labour wouldn’t have been humiliated with losing half its vote share. Starmer’s leadership would have benefitted enormously from a Burnham victory in the seat, and his leadership as Prime Minister and Labour leader renewed and boosted.
The decision to block Burnham from standing as the Labour candidate in the seat just gives a very strong smell of fear of a weak Labour leader and Labour Prime Minister.
It’s seems to me that there would have been immense political and electoral benefits for Starmer, his leadership, his Labour government, the Labour Party and ultimately the country had he and his leadership team, along with the Labour NEC all had the courage and foresight to allow Burnham to stand as the Labour candidate in Gorton and Denton. Not doing so has resulted in them all emerging weaker in the process. Ironically.
