I’d imagine there will be a lot of people disagreeing with that proposal but there are *some* benefits to it; people with all sorts of experience can apply; perhaps there’s ex UK/US/EU etc ex special forces members residing in Ireland that would bring a lot of experience to the table.

It’s not like they will just let any Tom dick or Harry in….

This is more of an indication of where the DF is at generally tbh. Terrible idea.

Big day to be one of those lads who wore hiking shoes to primary school and knew a little bit too much about WWII

I feel like this is kind of a dig at the current pool currently serving

Recruiters will only be searching for candidates of the highest calibre amongst the general public.

    That’s a bit of a long shot..

Any member of the public who applies to the Rangers should automatically go on a watchlist

Have the recruiters ever seen the members of the general public at all??

Surely this is just for ex special forces? Or ex armed forces?

How could a civilian contend with others unless it’s pure physical fitness.

What would the Irish version of Gravy Seal be? Curry Chip Cadets?

I don’t think it’s a *terrible* idea: 21 and 23 SAS recruit directly from civvy street, after all, and the selection will in all likelihood remain unchanged, just with a larger pool of candidates applying. I’d be kind of surprised that an SF unit like this is needing that, however. The pattern in most militaries in most countries is that the SF units are typically *over* subscribed, which is what allows them to be so highly selective in who they pick.

If it’s only to recruit specialists with experience that can’t be found within the military, then it’s a good idea.
