This is one thing which annoys me the most about people who are trying to promote vegetarian dishes… “better than meat…” or “taste like meat…” is not why some one would eat vegetarian. I am not vegetarian… but I do like many vegetarian dishes because they taste good.

I think all non vegan foods should have meaty name then like “meat candy” or “fish wine”

EU always on the fucking ball with top of the list issues. Protecting traditional meat producers brands. Thanks guys, enjoy the military kickbacks, god bless you.

I don’t know why this article says that because they just rejected that proposition.

If it isn’t meat, then why should it have a meat-like name?

  6. Nemeszlekmeg on

Not sure the EU was *needed* to intervene, but it was indeed annoying that there would always be this “meat comparison” when the microcosm of vegan foods on their own are delicious and appealing enough.

Bloody idiotic, I love meat but this is so stupid.
There’s no need for this law, it’s all just farming lobby crap.

  8. To be honest, I think this will help people actually try out more of the foods, I know the meat names primes me to think it is ‘meat’, it isn’t, that doesn’t mean it tastes bad, or heck some of it even tastes great, but if you are expecting a meat taste you’ll be disappointed.

  9. Wtf why, how else am I gonna know what my quick-veggie tastes like next to the meat I cooked?? (Serious btw)

The wonderful thing here is the whole argument is based on “people are misled and it puts meat farmers at a disadvantage”…..

Except, shops have to keep meat away from other fresh produce. So alternatives are marketed in a different counter zone of the shop.
Which means people have to specifically go there to get it.

It also implies that meat farmers are disadvantaged, because coincidentally meat sales have decreased in some areas, more likely due to economic constraints.

But the ridiculous part of this is now they’ve disadvantaged an entire other food industry, because not only will many manufacturers have to rename their products, they have to find another way to convey texture, scent and taste….

All because? Someone didn’t read a label at the supermarket? Or because meat farmers need calming down after not getting increased subsidies?

Whoever pushed this through had wasted a monumental amount of time and resources which could have been allocated to other agricultural issues.

Ultra processed vegetarian products are a scam. Eat organic food ffs. They grow FROM the soil (or hydroponic?), you PICK them up, steam them, cook them, fry them, and you EAT the darn thing. They taste GOOD.

I am not a vegetarian or a vegan. I also eat meat, fish, eggs, and any other animal product, but FFS, stop it with the processed food. It is NOT GOOD for your health.

EU: people should eat less meat and more vegetables

Farm lobby: we’re selling less meat, do something

EU: ok, we’ll make some stupid regulation to try to diminish intake of plant based meat replacements

  13. Farming lobby and absolutely definitely a problem that needed addressing right now, surely no other more pressing matters that we should pay attention to

So they are also banning naming meat meals with vegan names i.e. chicken fries right? Right?

  15. apfelwein19 on

Honestly one of the most disgraceful pieces of recent legislation. Just catering to the populist vote.

  16. Interestingly these banned words will also apply to cell cultured meat, which will doubtless make it trickier for people who choose to avoid certain kinds of meat e.g. pork.

    Banned words:

    > beef, veal, pork, poultry, chicken, turkey, duck, goose, lamb, mutton, ovine, goat, drumstick, tenderloin, sirloin, flank, loin,  steak, ribs, shoulder, shank, chop, wing, breast, liver, thigh, brisket, ribeye, T-bone, rump and bacon

    > EU lawmakers have agreed to ban meaty names such as steak and bacon for vegetarian and vegan foods, but “veggie burgers” and “meat-free sausages” will remain on the table.

So, it is really about sane labeling without misleading names and dark patterns, not just lobbying.

  18. JusSumYungGuy on

So you can’t call it a sausage or a chicken nugget substitute? “Plant-based protein enhanced vegetable paste product” seems like there’s nobody to win in that situation

I am vegetarian, I hate that the majority of vegan&vegetarian products try to pretend the taste of meat

Meat is disgusting for me, so it is so hard to find vegetarian meals that don’t pretend to be meat
