In one month, a soul-deciding election will take place in Hungary, which is already part of Russian interference.
Multiple European national security sources have reported that the Kremlin has tasked a team of political experts to intervene in the Hungarian elections scheduled for April 2026. The goal is clear: to preserve Viktor Orbán’s power. According to the Budapest agreement, a three-member team is operating at the embassy on behalf of the GRU, the Russian military intelligence service. The interference is aimed at increasing the sense of external threat, conflating this with the opposition, and proving that only the incumbent government can provide a solution. One can expect the provocation of emergency situations—e.g., false or even real bomb threats—that can be blamed on Ukraine, which the government can supposedly detect and avert in time, only to then hold the opposition responsible, whom they are simultaneously trying to link to Ukraine by all means.
The opposition’s task will be extremely difficult; Orbán and the Russians are capable of anything to remain in power. It may even occur that the election will not be held at all if, despite the disinformation campaign, the opposition candidate is polled as more likely to win.
