Or exactly as dangerous as I thought?

    >leaving them exposed to eye abrasions, impact injuries from road debris, and in the most serious cases, falling from a moving vehicle.

Who would have thought that the same risks to a human sticking their head out the window and not wearing a seatbelt could impact…any other creature? /s

This is so obvious. I’ve always questioned why people do it.

Almost 20 years ago I was on the M60 in the rain, at night, and from a distance saw and heard a yellow Labrador in the middle lane ahead of us, writhing in agony. We slowed down and took the left lane to avoid him. A woman was standing on the hard shoulder screaming, desperate to run into the road and grab the dog. Her car was parked up just ahead. There were several cars at full speed together a little way behind us and it was clear to us and to the woman that the drivers aside from the front one would not see the dog. It stood no chance. We had hazards on and slowed to a crawl, and I honestly thought I was going to watch that woman die in my side mirror. She didn’t step out, but her cries will stay with me forever.
So shut the bloody car windows. Always.

It’s okay to have it open an inch or two for ventilation and temperature regulation. You do not want it open wide enough for any body part to hang out of the vehicle.

When I was little my mum told me a ‘story’ about this ‘lady she knew’ who stuck her arm out of her car to wave to a friend and had the arm taken clean off by another vehicle – never had the desire to stick anything, living or not, out of a car window before that really but especially not since.

Wish I could post photos here. My dog only sticks his head out when I’m going under 40mph. At higher speeds he’s either enjoying a wind roll through the vehicle. Or he sticks just his nose ever so so slightly, so the mirror blocks most of the wind.

“Letting your dog hang out of the car window is more dangerous than you think”

    They think you’re a idiot.

There are people driving around Australia with dogs on the back of a Ute in the city, literally running about held on by a lead strapped to the back of the cab, Think a little terrier hanging out the window of grandma’s honda jazz isn’t too bad in comparison

The Highway Code includes something about securing dogs in vehicles and there being a fine for not doing so.

So yeah, maybe enforce that or something.
