It’s difficult to get exact numbers of deaths related to failures by the DWP, but between 2011 and 2014 2,380 people died after being found fit for work and having their disability benefits stopped. Between 2014 and 2019, 17,000 people died whilst waiting for a decision on their PIP or ESA claims. A BBC investigation found 82 cases where the DWP’s actions had directly contributed to someone’s death. Below are three examples that illustrate the extent of cruelty exhibited by the DWP.
