They may be looking at it under Section 7 of the Public Order Act.

7.—(1) It shall be an offence for any person in a public place to distribute or display any writing, sign or visible representation which is threatening, abusive, insulting or obscene with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or being reckless as to whether a breach of the peace may be occasioned.

The intent would be difficult to prove though.

We have this every year. Who remembers the limerick (i think) parade years ago with an oprn topped car with three lads in impeccible naxi uniforms giving salutes put to the crowd? It made the news i think but cany find any mrntion of it online

Tens of thousands of comments online shaming them. Radio phone ins. National media going front page on it.

I’ve seen them described as youths and I’m sure some adults may have been involved or enabled it, but I’d initially heard they were 16 year olds (happy to be corrected but a lot of what I’m saying is under an assumption that they’re minors).

I know I got a mix of upvotes and downvotes for this, but as a former teenage boy, in groups, we are fucking morons who completely lose the run of ourselves with a joke, especially when in poor taste. As an adult, I can recall a bunch of shameful or embarrassing or cringe moments from my teen years I definitely regret.bThese lads fucked up badly and took a poor taste concept for a float like a trailer load of boxes marked Epstein files, then thought of having a Garda imprisoning fellas then one lad said he’d dress in drag and suddenly they’re mess fighting acting out a damned rape scene. Rape is never funny (unless it’s apparently one of the thousands of times we’ve seen a “drop the soap” joke whenever a character goes to prison somehow… Why the fuck has that been a common joke for my 40 years… Like it’s based on the reality of SA in prison being a massive problem).

Anywho, name an actual rapist, apart from McGregor to garner this level of media attention or condemnation or shaming?

These kids fucked up badly, no doubt, but surely the punishment should be educating them about the harm and offence they caused to victims of SA mixed with a public written apology to the parades and spectators. I doubt I’m wrong, but I’d wager if you asked each one what they thought victims of SA might think seeing their float in advance and every one of them will say they never considered it – ignorance isn’t innocence, but it’s kinda important.

Whatever punishment they deserve, this backlash is absolutely disproportionate. I said it yesterday, but if one of the kids takes their own life because they can’t handle the insane anxiety they must be feeling right now, will those who shamed them feel blameless, because they were in a group and got carried away in the moment or could they say it’s not their fault because no one pointed out how blatantly damaging a pile-on on kids at a national level like this could obviously send someone over the edge.

It feels almost ironic to me at this point and I’m terrified I’m predicting a potential outcome. (For the record, when I suggested this elsewhere, I got responses along the lines of “good, they deserve it”… Again, these are kids).

Punish the kids, yeah, absolutely, but I cannot get over how a group of minors losing all sense of appropriateness to humour is now also a Garda investigation. Again, we had 1,000 rapes victims going to gardaí last year and not one single perpetrator in my life bar McGregor (deservedly) has garnered a fraction of the collective national shaming that these kids are getting.

I’m a hell of a lot more outraged at the lack of investigation into the Ireland allegations in the files, than anything to do with this float.

As bad taste as it is this should be covered by freedom of speech/expression.

I’m someone who hates this new era of political correctness and cancel culture. I still like to go back and watch comedians like Eddie Murphy say the craziest shit back in the day and laugh my ass off. Having said that, making light of something as serious as child rape is beyond unacceptable. I don’t think anyone should go to jail necessarily, just publicly shamed and perhaps pay some fines and/or do some community service.
