Hes not wrong. No one can really say the government in Cuba should stick around, sadly the embargo should fuck off too.

That’s odd, Leo didn’t have much to say about America locking up people and deporting them to foreign concentration camps while his contemporary was over there licking the boot.

The later part of Leo’s first post has me confused. What has bringing supplies to an embargoed country got to do with trampling on the rights of the embargoed country’s citizens?
Does Leo think Cubans should personally suffer until the Cuban government relents? And that anyone trying to eliminate that suffering is supporting the Cuban government?
Edit: I think he’s saying that the embargo itself is trampling on Cuban rights, but the way his message is structured, with what feels like an admonishment immediately before it, makes it confusing

It’s very easy to fetishise radicals, and ignore all the suffering they cause just because they share your dislike of someone punchable.

This isn’t really fighting Kneecap. He didn’t say anything derogatory about Kneecap, just the Cuban government. He supported them opposing the embargo. No literacy or nuance, just straight into American style tribalism for OP.

It’s ironic to see Tadhg Hickey kicking up a fuss about Leo meeting with Saudis when he openly and explicitly supports some of the world’s biggest human rights abusers like Iran, Russia, Syria and Qatar. This is the man who initially spoke against the 2022 world cup being held in Qatar but then did a complete u-turn once he realised there was money to be made simping for them.
I’m no fan of Leo or FG but that thick tankie cunt can fuck right off.

Is this actually the level of ad hominem arguments our politicians equip themselves with? The Cuban government is a shit show, but it’s not Kneecap’s responsibility to simultaneously take on the local government (something they’ll have zero influence on, something that would be the job of…I dunno… a government elected official like a prime minister).

It’s all fucked up.
I idolised and romanticised the Cuban revolution as a younger person but their government is extremely repressive, has been for decades, and it’s not all attributable to the embargo.
The embargo doesn’t stop them criminalising exactly the kind of art that kneecap themselves make, for example.
On the other hand, Leo Varadkar getting triggered by a group of people bringing aid and publicity to people who need it is peak newstalk dad energy.

Kneecap are so weird. 90% of the people who like them know nothing about their music, and wouldn’t even understand it anyway. The vast majority of their hype comes from their activism and not their music too.
All for celebrities or whatever you’d call them having an opinion on things, but at a certain point they’re just activists who happen to sometimes make music, more than they are musicians.

Kneecap has done far more for the likes of Palestine and now Cuba than his ilk, completely spineless until he left his office. Now just another social media warrior. I had no idea bringing medical supplies to a country that needs them would be seen as controversial, whether the Cuban govt are cunts or not.

I just don’t understand why he is acting like they are politicians. Yes art is political and their art is political for certain, but to hold them to the standard of an elected government official is wild. They are just bringing aid to people, and I’m not sure why he believes that these rappers can influence the Cuban government.
If he wants this to be addressed maybe he should have a word with the Taoiseach or minister for foreign affairs.

Good on both Kneecap and Varadkar! The dialogue is a good thing. The US are not the only issue in Cuba and if kneecap are going there with that bias they will get a rude awakening – I’ve been many times and speak from experience. It’s great Kneecap are going, and they should also address issues when there if they are going to get involved they should ensure due diligence to have the biggest impact possible on human rights.

Varadkar is dead right on this one tbf. What Kneecap are doing is brilliant but they have such a high profile it would be brilliant if they could address the human rights issues and oppression in Cuba as well. The embargo is awful but the government of Cuba treat their own people like absolute dirt. Kneecap seem to be confused about the regime in Cuba as well. Their instagram post mentions Cuba supporting “national liberation movements around the world” but their own citizens are far from liberated. Partly due to the embargo but also due to the dictatorship.
