Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said that against the backdrop of the U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran and the resulting oil crisis, Ukraine is facing certain challenges in the fuel sector, as Kyiv imports about 85% of its fuel. He said the government has set priorities to address these challenges, with supplying the Armed Forces of Ukraine as the top priority.

According to him, the military currently has sufficient reserves of diesel and aviation fuel.

“Procurement is ongoing. Negotiations with partners on additional purchases have begun. The army will be fully supplied,” the energy minister said.

Shmyhal named the spring sowing campaign as the second priority. Its total demand amounts to 300,000 tons of diesel fuel, but, he said, most agricultural producers have already secured supplies or contracted volumes in advance. This should be sufficient for several weeks.

“The sowing season has begun and is currently proceeding according to schedule,” he added.

Another priority, the minister said, is business and retail trade. He noted that most fuel supply contracts are currently being fulfilled, though he acknowledged there were “certain problems” at the beginning of March.

“In March, Ukraine has already imported nearly 250,000 tons of gasoline, diesel, and liquefied gas. Reserves include nearly 100,000 tons each of gasoline and diesel. For comparison, as of Feb. 1 this year, there were 64,000 tons of gasoline and 83,000 tons of diesel,” Shmyhal reported.
