I came across this Dutch-language article discussing ASML and its relationship with the United States, particularly around export controls and strategic alignment.

The author argues that increasing US influence over semiconductor policy could be shaping ASML’s decisions, and raises concerns about what this might mean for the Netherlands and Europe more broadly.

Since the article is opinion-based and in Dutch, I’m curious how people here view this issue.

To what extent do you think ASML’s position is shaped by US policy, and is this seen as a necessary alignment or a potential risk for Europe’s technological independence?

The article makes a good point. It’s both pathetic and anti-business to subordinate your company’s business decisions to the whims of a FOREIGN GOVERNMENT.

If this was Dutch government giving orders to ASML, ok I would understand, China does that too…. but a foreign government, and one that has proven to view the rest of the world as cannon fodder on top of that anyway? Puke.

This is a far-right ‘news’ rag. I wouldn’t trust them to be objective about the colour of the sky.

Before reading the article (and it’s gonna be hard since i’m not Dutch and words are lost in a translation) i’m gonna say my two cents:

ASML’s products are for the entire world,no matter where they sell their products everywhere. Therefore, no foreign policy can be applied outside the foreign state’s soil in order to influence the company.

Imagine if Porsche starts making pick-up trucks for everyone because the US told them to do so. Sovereignity is also this

    What garbage.

It is subject to US policy because it uses US technology.

In the same way, the US is highly subject to NL policies, if the NL sanctions the US, the US won’t have access to any computer chips made by new ASML machines, or even older machines that need parts and service from ASML.

This is what happens when we have global supply chains. But also. We only have the abundance we have today because of Global supply chains.

There’s a reason non-US defense manufacturers go to great lengths to make their product itar free.
