Tbh they aren’t wrong though. look at the distance between Maldives to Chagos vs Mauritius lmao – 300 miles distance from Maldives, whilst it’s 1300 from Mauritius. Makes sense though apparently /s

can we just annex these islands, they’ve been British territory longer than Mauritius has existed

If we are dead set on committing Imperialism in 2026 then yes, it is objectively better to transfer the territory to the country with the ancient and dubious claim that *isn’t* persecuting the natives and forcibly displacing them instead of the one with an old and dubious claim that *is.*

Still better to not transfer it at all considering that is the wish of the majority of the diaspora, overwhelming majority if you exclude the people living in a country where they cannot legally oppose the deal or even assume only 1 in 10 would act differently if the law did not exist.

Which, funnily enough, the lawyer that aided Mauritius at the UN helped design that law.

The Imperialism, in case it’s not clear lies in performing a 19th century land transfer on the basis of temporary past ownership while rejecting the right of the natives to Self-Determination.

Offer the Maldives the same deal but with no ongoing payments. Or better still give it back to the islanders.

The greed from the Maldives might be their undoing in all of this. The government has only really cared about the Chagos when they heard they were getting money and China was behind all the legal challenges. The UK should sell the Chagos to the US directly and the Maldives will not mess with the US.
