La scuola elementare di Francoforte spende 14.000 euro a settimana in sicurezza per proteggere una ringhiera 2,75 pollici troppo bassa, anche se sono passati 100 anni senza problemi

Until a new railing can be installed, the school is required to hire a security service with 12 guards, which costs around €14,000 per week. Does this seem excessive?

  2. It is not DIN conform. If it is also Denkmalschutz (historic preservation) then it could take years to replace. Best example of German system

Yes, this is a real story. And yes, it was handled according to protocoll. And yes, almost every non pacifistic citizen right now wants to smack someone for this.

Since when are we using inches in Europe? /s

    Anyway, it’s about 7cm.

I could’ve taken some welder equipment and added a bit of metal to the top in a weekend.

(Aside from the fact I cannot welD.)

regulatory incentive structures exist for a reason.

it’s always easy to make noise when you are just barely on the wrong side of the law.

it’s a simple question of whether you want to live in a place where laws matter or not.

    Typical Germany.
Also typical when there is no money for a functioning toilet in the same school.
Don’t know if the railing is fixed – but it would be also typical if it needs years to fix.

Even made international news, interesting. But jeah, it’s still fucked up.

  9. They are changing the railing. Also, they are being scammed, it doesn’t cost 28k to hire a guy for 2 weeks.

  10. I can come and replace this railing today, while at the same time guarding it until it is up to code, for meager 30k€. Savings!

knowing german construction costs replacing the railing would pay itself off in 2 years

Good I loath this “X years it wasn’t an issue”. No, it **was** an issue. It just wasn’t detected.

Rules and regulations broadly exist for a reason. “Oh I violated the rules for a very long time why should I follow them now” is utterly insane and unreasonable and a recipe for chaos because it incentivizes what we exactly don’t want.

Love my taxes being unreasonably wasted as usual. The stairs have been standing with no issue for 100 years, but they are a problem now..and the fix is to hire 12 security guards instead.
