That group would still have been tough for us. I know there was a lot of newfound confidence in the wake of Portugal and Hungary, but there’s quite a few people getting ahead of themselves. I thought we were unlucky not to have beaten Czechia, but Denmark would still have been a tough challenge.

Regardless of how it would have went, Mexico vs. Ireland in Mexico City would have been a generational event

People talking about how we could have got a result from the group when we couldn’t even qualify for it 😅

    Hardly an opportunity wasted

They weren’t good enough to qualify

Could have been a lovely, well themed group: South of America, South Africa, South Korea, South of Ireland.

I’m sure playing South Africa in Atlanta in 28°C to 34°C heat would have been a stroll in the park.

I can easily see this group having ended up with Ireland on 2 points.

Could have had the southern part of Africa, Korea and Ireland all in the one group :'(

The czechs are clearly the main character of a story that we were a cocky blockade in one chapter of.

They’re on a crazy run with everything to prove.

I’m sanguine about this because of the disgusting state of the US government, I won’t be watching it this year.

Wow, so that’s one imaginary group stage to go with the imaginary final from 2002.

The delusion is real amongst Irish fans.

    It’s embarrassing.

Nearly as bad as England with “the final”

I took this to mean we would have been South Ireland and there would be 3 Souths and that would be funny but people actually think we would get through

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves… sure we were unlucky to have lost to Czech but we were also extremely lucky to have made it past Hungary in all fairness. Also even if we beat Czech we’d have needed another big performance against Denmark.

It was an opportunity sure but the odds were heavily stacked against us from the start… we’d literally have needed all the stars to align just to qualify and even then that group is no walk in the park either

A whole load of what ifs. Can we not just be happy that we’ve become a far more exciting team to watch? The players’ confidence is there, and the fan support is there too. I genuinely believe that had we started our qualifying well, we wouldn’t have reached the playoffs. We’d have accepted that Portugal was always going to beat us, and Hungary would be the nail in the coffin. We’d have walked away saying it was a tough group without even trying to get the better of the big teams. What we did was amazing. The change of pace, style, and aggression is actually worth tuning in for, and I, for one, hope it continues and grows for the next tournament. These players are confident and have also tasted bitter defeat. It should make them more hungry not to be in this position again and believe they can do better.

Nah, the teams in this group are handy enough to have done us over no bother. It would have been tough. I think we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves, and we’re doing the English thing of taking some teams for granted when we really shouldn’t.

Golden opportunity for some banter with some sexy Mexicans
