    But investment in childcare and other things to promote having children? No thanks. At this rate we have to hope for another pandemic to take care of the elderly /s kinda

    Fortunately, the Swiss pension system is not solely pay-as-you-go, but also funded.

    Nevertheless, in my view, we are getting it completely wrong by strengthening the first pillar (the 13th pension) whilst refusing to do the same for the second (the rejection of the BVG 21 reform in 2024).

    The first pillar is a system that redirects the wealth of the working population to pensioners, whereas the second pillar allows people to ‘put their money to work’ and benefit from market returns and the effect of compound interest.

    The first pillar must be maintained to ensure a minimum pension, but it is really the second pillar that needs to be strengthened if we are to ensure decent pensions, especially given our demographic situation.
