Two English soccer teams playing in Croke Park. How times have changed

  2. FirstandGrandTCAP on

Remember when the GAA wouldn’t allow Liam Miller play a fundraiser for his family on their sacred grounds and then whinged about feeling bullied afterwards.

Can’t have the All Ireland in August/September but can have soccer matches. Why not use the Aviva?

  4. VastJuice2949 on

Good, more sports should be played on croke park. It’s not some special sacred ground because the GAA says so. It’s a stadium like any other.

Pre-season games like this are normally pretty shite. Won’t be any of the ‘passion’ you expect from a United/Leeds game. Only interest really will be if there are new signings to see. At least this is close enough to the season start that you should not have players still resting after the World Cup.

Our obsession with foreign football teams is embarrassing.

Keep in mind that United organised a friendly back in 2023 in Dublin against Bilbao, sold out the game and then later arranged another friendly the day before in Old Trafford and sent the second string team to Dublin.

The last time United played here in the Aviva they ripped all the fans off, marketed the event as the last friendly game, bringing over all the A Listers, tickets weren’t cheap, the day before a home game was announced and they threw out the B team and fucked over all the fans, nobody had a good word to say about it, families paying between €200-€500 getting fleeced. Still a lot of people bitter about it reading through the Reds sub

Going to be so weird to see this likely sell out while these “fans” wouldn’t spend a cent at a local Premier Division club.

You can’t complain about Ireland not qualifying for the world cup and then go to something like this. Any argument about “the standard isn’t the same” is gone, these will be tired lads, many of the players on display will be the youth teams.

A few years ago Bohemians played Chelsea in one of these games. Bohemians played a 14 year old Evan Ferguson, such is the standard of a premier league side in pre season. That’s what you’ll be paying €100 a ticket on, again hosted in a venue where Irish football won’t even get residual benefit.

Will the football gear wearing fans be protesting foreign games at this one?

  11. Unhappy-Avocado1531 on

”Patriots” and GAA dinosaurs wont like this for no reasons whatsoever

  12. A game that will generate €’000s for Premier League clubs and the GAA, from Irish football fans, without a cent actually going to Irish football.

No wonder Irish football is in the gutter financially.

  13. Bohemian_Dub on

Everyone was heartbroken with Ireland result and moans about the state of Irish football will now buy a ticket to this and it will have an attendance higher than the fai cup final, we get exactly what we deserve.

  14. Sting2121 on

Odd enough thing but suppose makes up for not having the NFL again this year

Could an argument now be made that Croke Park is fit for a Euro 28 game ? As you know ‘IF’ we qualify the bandwagon will be off the charts and Aviva smaller capacity etc

do the FAI have to sanction this? not sure why they want this to go ahead, promoting foreign teams so the GAA can earn money.

  16. Snoo-86513 on

Saw this yesterday and genuinely thought it was an April fools. The highest ever attendance at a soccer game in Ireland is going to be a money grabbing friendly between two English clubs in Croke Park.

  17. Character_Pizza_4971 on

I’m absolutely certain the FAI have to sanction this. Remember when Limerick (insert name) wanted to play a friendly against Barca and the FAI wouldn’t allow it because they had given some other crowd a licence to promote another friendly.

  18. PeaceLoveCurrySauce on

Premier league is some joke nowadays, a rivalry being played as a friendly

They’ll play weak teams at inflated ticket prices, better off spending the extra 100/200 to actually go over to England and watch a proper league match, be 10 times the experience

  19. cynical_scotsman on

Last time Man Utd were here they played a B team and charged a small fortune.

  20. No_Hold3094 on

Does anyone know how one would get the ticket master presale? Want to get my dad tickets if I can 🫶

  21. Chefdoc2000 on

Anymore 3 day old news that a tiny percentage of people care about?

  22. Gemini_2261 on

What purpose does this serve, other than padding certain people’s bank balances?

It looked like a late April Fools Day joke.

  23. Times have changed when there are more LOI fans complaining about this than GAA fans!

  24. IrishWaluigi98 on

Are they allowed to use the standing section for this game etc?

  25. Fyodors-Zossima on

Not a fan of this. Should be no pointless soccer games in HQ. That’s hallowed turf and part of our history. I don’t care how much money is made from it
