      The Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation has called for the disqualification of a Russian athlete who turned her back to the flags as the Ukrainian national anthem played for the country’s winner at a World Cup stage.

      The incident took place on Monday during the Hoop Final medal ceremony at the 2026 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Sofia, Bulgaria.  

      Ukraine’s Taisiia Onofriichuk won the routine, with Russia’s Sofiia Ilteriakova—competing under neutral status—taking silver and Italy’s Sofia Raffaeli finishing third.  

      At the ceremony, Ilteriakova was the only medalist to stand with her back to the flags as the Ukrainian anthem played—a gesture widely interpreted as [a breach of sports protocol](https://tvpworld.com/91918207/how-russia-turns-ex-soldiers-into-paralympic-athletes), which requires medal winners to face national symbols. 

      The gymnast’s behavior has sparked outrage, with the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation calling for her disqualification over what it described as a “demonstrative disrespect for the state symbols of Ukraine.”

      # ‘Act of political hostility’ 

      In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation said: 

      “Such behavior is a form of passive aggression against Ukrainian athletes, who are forced to compete under constant stress caused by the shelling of their cities. 

      “We view this act not as a personal gesture, but as a manifestation of the general state ideology of the aggressor country.” 

      The federation added that Ilteriakova’s behaviour constituted a direct violation of the principle of “sport outside politics” and said it should result in her being stripped of her neutral status. 

      “A true neutral athlete must refrain from any political manifestations. Turning your back on the Ukrainian flag in the midst of an ongoing war is an act of political hostility,” the statement said. 

      World Gymnastics, the international federation that oversees the sport, said on Wednesday that the incident is currently “under review” and will be considered “in accordance with applicable regulations and established procedures.” 

      The controversy comes as Russian athletes [have gradually been reintegrated](https://tvpworld.com/91432014/russias-neutral-athletes-expose-the-iocs-olympic-fiction) into top international competitions following restrictions imposed after Moscow’s aggression against Ukraine.

      Crazy because there has been multiple instances of Ukrainians being disqualified due to “being political”. Russians just need to be straight up banned till they sort their country out.

      I don’t know man, she seemed to be very neutral there. As neutral as you can possibly get. I don’t get what do we need the drama for.

      And why is no one mentioning the Italian one, haven’t seen a single person mention that. Whats going on there?

      All russian athletes should be banned for sure. As soon as all usa ones are banned as well 🙂
