      On Good Friday, a fire broke out involving the papal cross on Rzymowskiego Street in Warsaw. Firefighters are currently on the scene extinguishing the remaining embers. The causes of the incident will be investigated by the police. The cross that burned is the original under which St. John Paul II delivered his famous homily during his first pilgrimage to Poland.

      Dozens of reports about the fire during the Good Friday liturgy began reaching the capital’s fire department around 3:00 PM. The incident occurred in front of the Church of St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe on Rzymowskiego Street in Warsaw’s Mokotów district.

      Just one day before the fire of the papal cross, the 21st anniversary of St. John Paul II’s death was observed. He was 84 years old, and his pontificate lasted nearly 27 years. This year, that date fell on Maundy Thursday.

      Today, the Catholic Church observes Good Friday. On this day, the faithful traditionally participate in the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion and the Stations of the Cross.

      Before someone says “Who cares about some cross”. This cross is one of the most important aspects of fight against communism. When Pope came to Poland in 1979, the cross was central point of altar. This pope’s pilgrimage was one of first major blows to communist dictatorship. That is when pope said “Let Your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth. This earth!”. Poles were very religious and communists did not like this. This cross is counted as a historical relic, albeit not that old.
