  1. At £13.45 an hour, assuming it’s full time that’s nearing some median corporate salaries which require quals. Wild times.

There was a real push in a lot of companies to proudly claim about real living wage a few years ago and then they all seemingly realised that all it did was eat into profit and make employees happier, and fuck those guys we need profits.

A spokesperson said: “At M&S we’ve increased UK retail colleague pay by 34% and invested more than £350 million over the last four years while also offering sector leading benefits. This reflects the central role our people play as we reshape M&S for growth.”

Tesco said its wages have risen by 43% over the last five years, adding its workers “also benefit from a competitive reward package.”

Workers want better salaries, not ‘perks or rewards packages’ to obscure why they aren’t paying more.

imo any job that wasn’t furloughed or moved to fully remote during Covid is probably important enough to society to warrant more money.

I dont know much about economics but I would assume for a consumer based economy to thrive it would require people having money with which to consume.

Supermarkets are incredibly competitive businesses with razor-thin profit margins. They don’t have vast profits they can tap into to hand out pay rises with. If you want to advocate for supermarkets to pay higher wages, you need to understand that will mean they’ll have to charge more money for your food.
