“Yeah you know Brexit? We want that, but make it more shit”

  2. NecessaryFreedom9799 on

Well the rest of Britain will be right behind them!

  3. Souldestroyer_Reborn on

It always amazes me as a Scotsman, how my compatriots (rightfully) were against Brexit, yet, want Brexit on fucking steroids, AFTER seeing the outcome of such a colossal fuck up.

  4. No-Possibility8814 on

I’m personally so bored of the Scottish independence question that I now actively wish they would leave and quickly.

  5. Rorydinho on

    And Wales too. And Cornwall.

I’m glad Northern Ireland completely understand this and are split down the middle on being part of another larger country… Ireland or the UK.

I’m all for greater autonomy in the countries and regions (a la Germany)… but I’m not keen on bailing the countries and regions out when they inevitably fuck it all up.

  6. parkchanwookiee on

Federal UK is the better solution, let the industrial north form their own canton as well

  7. Street_Grab4236 on

Which is a shame because in principal, I’m very in favour of Scotland being independent. I do believe it would be morally right for us to be a self-determined nation unbound from the union but it’s just not viable at the moment.

  8. Waits-nervously on

I’m sure independence would be expensive, at least in the short term, but I’m going to need a better explanation for why Scotland is so uniquely incapable of running itself like the other 200 countries in the world.

  9. StandardNerd92 on

I would imagine they’d do an Ireland and make themselves an attractive tax haven with access to both the UK and EU markets

  10. UnlikelyHabit279 on

A newly independent Scotland would believe it would immediately access trillions and trillions of EU Euros, when in reality, it’ll just end up being in hock to the IMF for centuries tied to a massive loan it can’t repay. It’ll also see hundreds, if not thousands, of businesses going south of the border into England.

Damn, Libtin resorting to posting the Telegraph.

Things have gotten worse than I realised.

  12. dreistreifen on

This sounds like just the kind of thing that the Telegraph would say…. Oh hold on.

  13. Legitimate-Tip-2149 on

You’d think Brexit would have taught people this. We can’t just be a bunch of a tiny tribes all trying to go it alone.

  14. Catman9lives on

Ireland did it and is going far better why not Scotland ?

  15. Plane-Airport-9088 on

I’ve always liked the Union, but WOULD it be so bad for Scotland? I’m sure they have North Sea oil reserves that they would be free to drill and sell. No doubt trade between Scotland and the UK would benefit Scotland, too.

  16. Pale-Way9282 on

Scotland has a 13% public deficit.

Without the Barnett funding….its basically broke.

There is simply no way for Scotland to plug in that gap and this doesnt even count its share of the UKs public debt (£2.8T) and its associated social security (pension) liabilities.

  17. ChampionshipOk5046 on

I support Scottish independence, and so world you if you were Scottish.

    Many small countries exist.

  18. ServoSkull20 on

There is no way in which this ridiculous idea is not propped up and supported by the regime in Russia.

I would hope the Scots are smart enough to realise this.

  19. EconomistStreet5295 on

I’ll just say this: without London, most of the UK would be on the path to financial ruin. It’s a shame how one sided it all is

  20. Redditor6990 on

An Independent Scotland would be a manufacturing powerhouse with cheap energy.

  21. niccoboy_ on

Not a conspiracy theory when the symptoms are out in the open: Brexit, NATO fractures, Scotland, Catalonia, Hungary, Slovakia. The play has always been the same: weaken Europe by keeping it divided, distracted, and arguing with itself. Make way for the reformation of imperialism.

  22. quartersessions on

Being a relatively close follower of Scottish politics, I don’t think anyone with half a brain seriously disputes this any more. Back in the time of Alex Salmond, there was a lot of fantasy economics and double and triple counting of oil revenues going on.

I think the general position of the nationalist movement now is that Scottish independence would be painful – but look at the state of the UK. What do you have to lose? This works because people struggle to grasp issues of degree and, in general, find it hard to envisage what a collapse in real living standards looks like.

What they don’t seem to fully appreciate is pulling the £26 billion of public spending that Scotland benefited from as part of UK-wide fiscal sharing last year out of the economy would inevitably create an economic depression overnight – which is much worse and more prolonged than the odd economic downturn or recession. Combine that with an unstable currency situation and trade barriers with your largest export market – and it’s going to be unlike any situation a first world country has found itself in in modern times.

  23. Jumpy_Ad_559 on

What I will never get is why English people (the list of celebs that signed a document) are so concerned about Scotland going independent. Let them do it, let them be big boys and deal with consequences themselves. So many arrogant rich English celebs that believe we need to listen to them.

If Scotland becomes like a third world country then so be it, at least they’ll have have haggis

  24. insomnimax_99 on

    No shit?

Scottish independence would be brexit on steroids.

What’s the SNP’s plan to maintain their generous welfare policies without Westminster cash?

  25. xRICOENZOx on

They run a fiscal deficit of 12% of their GDP, so they’d either need to hike taxes, aggressively cut public services or both, just to survive.

  26. Few-Conversations on

I don’t understand how after brexit, anyone can want to go through that again. Although it’s likely to be much nastier and more damaging.
We were interlinked with the eu for a few decades and it was a huge mess separating. Now imagine a split after few centuries, it will be a disaster.

Scottish nationalist won’t care though just like brexiters didn’t. Blind nationalism at its very worst

  27. SixthHyacinth on

Well yes we know, and so does the SNP, hence why they have never really seriously answered economic questions about an independent Scotland and what severance from the UK actually means in that regard

  28. kahnindustries on

    They have lots of resources!

They have the highest gdp of smackheads in the world for one

  29. Automatic-Grade6177 on

The people of Scotland have a right to self determination but they need to realise if you are pro independence, it’s gonna come at a very dangerous cost

  30. It’s an unknown, all arguments for and against are based on ifs and maybes, like would they have a share of uk debts/assets, what would trade with rest of uk look like, what about EU, and dozens of other questions that would impact all sides and would not be known until negotiations actually happen.

  31. courage_the_dog on

As much as I’d love scotland to be independent, there’s so much internal conflict that it could never be beneficial.

Anyone that’s worked in scottish gov can tell you how difficult it is to make any decision

  32. scotswaehey on

Currently the Scottish Government must run a balanced budget on a potion of taxes raised in Scotland returned under the name the block Grant .

If they can do that without being allowed to borrow money, imagine what could be done with having access to all taxes raised in Scotland and being independent Scotland will have a central bank so wont be able to technically be in debt for any borrowing because it will be borrowing from its self just like other independent countries do!
