Why does reddit feel like McCarthy era America at the minute?

  2. Francis-c92 on

Pretty sure this has been a thing for them for years now and is nothing new?

  3. ResponsiblePatient72 on

Wait, is this article and the subsequent comments from Farage and Timothy all based off one tweet from 2024? Lol.

    > The curious take

LBC seem to be implying that ‘the nation’ loves horseracing and that Polanski is out on a limb with this one, but I’m not so sure. I’d quite happily see it banned and I doubt I’m the only one who feels that way…

My reflexive reaction was negative, but then I think about it – We’re in the middle of banning greyhound racing, to broad popular approval. Is horse racing really any different? Or is it just that I’ve ocassionally had a nice time putting a flutter on the horses in a way I never did with the dogs?

Side note – I’m amused how trawling through Farage’s distant history you’re digging up dozens of people testifying to his racism, but you do that with Polanski and its “I disagree with horse racing” and the hypno-boob thing (which is frankly hilarious).

Horse racing as a whole is pretty horrible. I appreciate that a lot of people go for the spectacle, and the chance to dress up (and drink) with friends, but it’s weird how so many of us abhor seeing animals at a circus, or indeed animals used in any sport, but think nothing of what we do to horses and the number of injuries and horse deaths.

Yes, they’re ‘bred for it’ but that doesn’t make it any better IMO. If the horses they bred for this purpose really “want” to run, then why are jockeys given literal whips to strike the horses with?

    Fck horse racing.

*Ahead of the world-famous meet in Merseyside this weekend, it has been revealed that Polanski has advocated for the sport to be banned altogether as recently as 2024.*

*Mr Polanski wrote on X in 2024: “Let’s go further and remove all animals involved in sport”.*

*He has also advocated for the ban of equestrian events from the Olympics.*

    _______

The article is literally based on things he said in 2024 and has no more recency. This isn’t a statement made by the Greens, it’s LBC dredging up comments to sell advertising space. If you go on Google News and type Zack Polanski this is the only article that I get involving horses – your Google may vary.

Luv bookies profits, luv horse racing, ‘ate greens. Simple as.

I agree with him and have done for years. This is not a controversial opinion by any means. It’s funny how this is presented as some kind of outrageous niche opinion. Most people I know and work with abhor the national. Our office sweepstake died a death some time ago as so few people were inclined to participate

  10. swordoftruth1963 on

Every race meeting seems to involve a horse being killed. Imagine if that happened at an athletics event

  11. AbbreviationsIll6106 on

When 3 horses die at Cheltenham, and the voice over says its been a great year because ‘x more people have attended’ its not a great look…

Can’t we just go full cyberpunk and put the jockeys on those Boston Dynamic horse robots and give them jousting lances?

  13. Remarkable_Face_7123 on

I don’t agree with everything he says but I’ve always believed this. Animals shouldn’t be used by the police or the royal guards anymore either.

  14. masterdufu on

Just the other day I saw Reform described as the party of banning but it seems like every party in the uk wants to ban things

  15. My horse loving mum hates horse racing. Too many dead, too many injured (then shot dead).

  16. Grantus89 on

If I think about it I can possibly agree but a straight up ban isn’t going to work and is going to cause backlash. Would be better off to first make it way safer, maybe getting rid of or changing the rules on jump races, maybe reducing the max number of horses in a single race.

  17. Kampfzwerg1992 on

If they do ban horse racing are they going to plan ahead for what happens to the horses or will we end up with a large number of abandoned racing horses like greyhounds?

  18. Djremster on

‘nation hears up’ as if anything more than a tiny fraction of this country gives a shit.

  19. dick-dock80 on

I’m not a fan of horse racing.

Polanski however is pure ideology. He will take a sledgehammer to our traditions in the name of whatever warped brand of Marxism he looks to implement.

  20. Fun-Mammoths on

I hate the way that in this article they throw in that ZP wants to decriminalise drugs and prostitution, when it has no bearing on the horse racing argument. Embarrassing.

  21. let_me_atom on

I can only imagine the sheer number of things the Greens would ban if they ever got into power. Would make the current government look like a shining beacon of individual rights and freedom. Same with any hard left government in history.

First comes power, then comes control -all in the name of creating a safe, harmonious society. Hopefully not all the famine and death stuff this time around, though with Zak’s economic policies I’m not too sure we can rule that out.

  22. chrizzleon on

I have no interest in horse racing myself. But nor do I have an interest in seeing it banned for those that do.
I’d prefer to see more incentives to do the right thing on more important matters like sustainable transport than puritanical idealism.
It comes across a bit “Cromwell” to start banning sports on idealistic grounds.

  23. AFriendlyBeagle on

The horses involved are abused, forced to perform in discomfort, routinely injured, and then oftentimes murdered. It’s a blood sport, and it’s sad that so many people are clutching their pearls over its proposed banning.

  24. A sport that wouldn’t exist if gambling was illegal. Couldn’t care less

  25. I_am_legend-ary on

    > The curious take comes despite the Green leader openly advocating for the legalisation of drugs and prostitution.

It’s almost like they are completely unrelated things.

It’s also worth pointing out that this isn’t a Party Policy that I’m aware of, just Zacks personal opinion

  26. eggsisnteggs on

I don’t care about horse racing, and I’m aware of the mortality rate of race horses, but I think Greens need to be careful not to slip into negative “ban this, ban that” territory

Edit: Oh it’s a random tweet from 2024. 24HR ROLLING NEWS LADS

  27. GingerPrince72 on

We should show in utter detail the killing of the horses who have to be euthanised from damage in horse racing. Show that to everyone who loves “the horses” so much.

  28. totallyhumanhonest on

    Good.

Horse racing is a cruel sport where animals are killed on site and contributes massively to gambling addiction. Same goes for dog racing.
