      It’s a social experiment to see how high trees can count.

      To be slightly more serious, I believe it’s just a way to track which tree is which for the purposes of general maintenance.

    3. Trees along roads that belong to the state are numbered and they keep inventory of them: Which kind of tree is it? How old are they? Are they sick? What is the necessary maintenance? etc…
