It’s appalling that a public representative would submit a character reference for a man convicted of exploiting a child without even acknowledging the victim or the gravity of the crime. The court itself called this omission “extraordinary,” and it’s hard to disagree. Also, leaning on the offender’s so called public service by his team is sickening.

Character references should be required to be given on the stand. If you want to back a predator, get sworn in and say it with your full chest for all the world to see.

    Why wasn’t the TD named?

We know it’s someone in Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael but who? Writing a character reference for a pedophile? Knowing what he did???

This thread/post needs upvoting badly so people can see it.

I have fringe knowledge of Dan Ram. I met him once a long time ago through friends who thought they knew him very well and him trying to weasel out of an already lenient jail sentence because of his “exceptional background” (his father is a diplomat) absolutely tracks for him. Disgusting excuse, he clearly has absolutely no remorse. . I hope he rots.

Jesus Christ; what an appalling read. That barrister all but blurted out what lies behind those ’mitigating’ factors and the plea for a soft sentence: the man comes from a very privileged background, and this counts for more than the ‘trivial’ offence for which he is in court. Some average scrote offending like this would be a more serious matter, Judge. 😳

The poor young lad, to hear sbout such grimy horse trading, diminishing what he endured. Great examples to him about adult behaviour. Clearly the defence’s attitude was shared by those who provided character references.
What does it take to get such people to cop the fuck on? There’s another such case around at the moment, where a politician in one or other House in Dublin stood up for a cousin or something convicted of some manner of financial abuse, of swindling. She too ignored the victims, and bigged up his upstanding virtues, in spite of massive amounts of evidence proving he’s an utter bastard. (She had even done this before! Re another criminal relation better left without such testimony)

(When public figures do this, clearly mendaciously, why is there no police inquiry into them, too? Seems criminal to me)

Why was the TD not named in the article? Anyone know why it’s not public record?

This giving references mullarkey is ridiculous. It’s done so often it’s basically meaningless.

Why don’t we know who the TD was? Surely it’s not anonymous

I’m well aware of this man. A LOT of people knew what he was up to. A proper groomer. There are people working in the church of Ireland who didn’t report him when they should have.

Every single person who gave him a reference need to be named.

Can a journalist who was there find out the names? Is there any way to find out?!

Anyone working in the church who gave him a reference need to be removed from ministry straight away. And a sitting TD?

It makes me so sad and so angry how anyone can give a reference to him.

Name the TD. If you give a character reference you should be named in court

I’m hoping the TD will be named once the court proceedings wrap up

I don’t get the purpose of the character reference to be honest.

But I also didn’t realise the person writing one would be talking about the crime or the victim.

I thought it would be along the lines of “I worked with him here and always found him polite and helpful” or “he volunteered with the local tidy towns picking up rubbish once a week”

He did good work in the community and so should be given leniency for molesting a 13 year old boy? What in the actual fuck.
