Slovenia’s newly appointed parliament speaker Zoran Stevanović said he plans to hold a referendum on the country’s potential withdrawal from NATO.

According to BalkanWeb and Slovenia’s public broadcaster RTVSLO, Stevanović confirmed the plan in recent remarks.

“I must say that we promised the people a referendum on the issue of leaving NATO and we will hold this referendum,” he said.

    **Push for “independent policy”**

Stevanović, leader of the Truth Party, said Slovenia should pursue a more independent and sovereign foreign policy.

“Ljubljana must once again become the center of decision-making for Slovenia, not Brussels,” he said, referring to European Union institutions.

At the same time, he acknowledged that leaving the EU would likely not gain public support, noting that Slovenia benefits significantly from membership.

    **Broader policy shift**

Stevanović also said his party intends to follow through on campaign promises, including advocating for Slovenia’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

He added that the country should avoid involvement in foreign military and diplomatic conflicts, arguing that such engagements do not serve Slovenia’s interests.

    **Signals possible Moscow visit**

Speaking about his first foreign trips as speaker, Stevanović said visits to Skopje and Copenhagen are already planned, but added he also intends to visit Moscow in the near future.
“I would like to build bridges and cooperate well with all countries, regardless of the wall that has been built between the West and the East,” he said.

The statement comes amid renewed criticism of NATO by President Donald Trump, who has suggested the United States could withdraw from the alliance.

Trump recently described NATO as a “paper tiger” and said US membership is “beyond reconsideration” following disagreements with allies over the war with Iran and efforts to secure shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also said Washington may “re-examine” its relationship with NATO, citing disputes over burden-sharing and access to military bases.

Is that the same one who was leaking EU documents to Russia like ~~Orban~~ Szijjártó did ?

  3. LittleSchwein1234 on

One Orbán out, another Orbán in…

“Independent” foreign policy means you’re on the table while others are getting their utensils ready. Have we not learnt anything from Ukraine?

  4. Easy for countries that has NATO around every direction. No one will attack them and they are safe. So why pay that.

I propose that nato allow air space if someone decides to attack them. And not defend them even if they are in middle of nato pool.

  5. County_Tight on

Just leave, not only Nato but also EU please, we don’t like or need you.

  6. We should ditch NATO and make military support mandatory for EU members.

    Finally not Slovakia!

Edit: Thank you our Slovenian bros & gals!

Is there any chance to hold this referendum? I thought those 4 first parties are pro-eu, pro-nato….

one absolute national security debacle of slovenia to simply refuse to vet this man for any SNS ćaci connections

  10. He is the president of one of the two smallest parties in parliament. Unlike Orbán or Fico, his party is small, but from the looks of it, they will be members of the governing coalition. They hold 5 seats in a 90-seat parliament. He is of Serbian nationality and is a total Russian Trojan horse.

  11. specifikator on

This party operates base on playbook straight out of Kremlin, im sure they are founded by Russia

  12. Useful_Sound8921 on

    Wellllll,
do some homework before you all fall for these sensational news…
In slovenia there are two strong parties that get combined cca 60%. They “wage battle” with eachother to get other parties on their side.

This guy got 5% of votes, violates his promises for his voters right after voting, because he is working with one of the above mentioned strong party (he pleadged not to work with it before elections).

He is a pawn that will not be anywhere in next elections. He is just popular because he is a surprise with a bad history (former bad cop, fraudes, sexurity company, bankrupcy…).
    Sorry for grammar.

Stevanovic? I recognize a Serb anytime. Of course he supports Putin..
If you don”t like Brussels, then why are you even in a union? If you vote to join, then follow the rules…

  14. This nonsense would be unthinkable in times of His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty Franz Josef.

  15. FoulMoodeternal on

Oh. If he wants to be ruled from Moscow, why doesn’t he just move there?

  16. Putin: With the loss of Hungary we have a new opening for a lap dog

    Slovenia: Consider the position filled.

  17. GovernmentBig2749 on

And join……(drum rolls in building tension) YUGOSLAVIA 0.2!

  18. RomanceDawnOP on

Don’t worry, he’s a moron with 5% of the vote who got ceremonial position as a bribe to get a few votes in parliament (he holds 5 out of 90)

Both actual big parties are strongly pro eu

  19. Thunder_Beam on

Honestly the fact that NATO is still predominately controlled by the US is not good

  20. alexx_Slo on

chill. he’s an idiot, populist, Serb (not Slovenian) and with his head deep into conspiracy theories. Also a former convicted criminal. Party is most likely funded by Russia. His party got 5% of votes – mostly from antivaxxers, weirdos and some Serbs.

We are not going out of NATO and we support Ukraine!

  21. Hopeful_Sun_ on

OMG, nooo. Slovenia is such a tiny country, it cannot be left alone.

  22. realistically, what is the point of slovenia being a mamber of nato?

  23. Grabs_Diaz on

Can we please build up potent EU military structures and command chains?

I’m not confident NATO will survive for much longer with the US going rogue and both Right-wing and Left-wing parties here in Europe rallying against it. Trump also provides loads of rhetorical ammunition to them which makes any defence of NATO in the public court of opinion exceedingly difficult, especially in those countries that don’t feel any imminent threat from Russia.

Make military integration another integral pillar of the EU that comes packaged with the rest of the Union and build up military capabilities that can take over from NATO.

  24. Sounds like Slovenia will be free for grabs soon. I call dibbs!

  25. Scout171421 on

I’d support that move in Croatia. NATO’s credibility is destroyed. The leader of the western alliance and the free world is not only unreliable ally, but it became a threat to the other members.

I’ve got to admit I wouldn’t want my country to go to war for the US even if it was a defensive war. Not after so many threats to Denmark and so much humiliation to us all. So what’s the point of NATO now?

It’s not just about the US government, but about the American people who democratically elected those in office which gives legitimacy to their actions. Trump was very clear about his stances towards us during his campaign. That shows how much Americans care about us and our alliance.

We have the EU. Even though we need time to rebuild our militaries, together we are already a formidable force. If Ukraine could stand against Russia, if Iran could stand against the US, the whole damn EU can stand against anyone. Especially after we move towards further integration.

  26. Any-Original-6113 on

Another populist. Europeans got rid of Orbán, they’ll get rid of Fico, and him too. Good thing he doesn’t have much power.

  27. the soviet union left these countries unable to have self esteem for generations to come

  28. SpatulaWholesale on

    Do… do we care?

Are we supposed to care about Slovenia?

I mean, if they don’t want to honour their commitment, and don’t want the mutual defence, then sure…

  29. Note: This guy’s party is also an extremely anti-vax party, and isn’t one of the major parties.

Even though it’s still scary that they got seats anyways, they went from 0 to 5 in one election

  30. Let‘s guess:

They need a supermajority and expect the oppositions to vote against it?

I hope the oppositions know how to punish parties willing to work with the far right.

  31. Reading this in Hungary, “cooperate well with all countries, regardless of the wall that has been built between the West and the East” and “Ljubljana must once again become the center of decision-making for Slovenia, not Brussels,” are the EXACT same panels Orban was repeating for years, but instead of a stronger nation and better economy what we got was total political isolation and deals with Russia and China with the details of these deals kept secret for decades so that no one could see it.

I suspect he is paid by Putin trough Serbian subsidiaries. I hope some of our journalists will start looking into that soon.

  34. Reclusiarh on

He’s a far right anti-vax pro russia populist with ties to the Serbian mob. We truly do not deserve democracy over here.

  35. The next Russian client state?

Let’s leave NATO…Russia’s better  (because they pay me to sell out the country).

May have already happened to the US too. MAGA are definately Putin simps.
