There are two nuclear related concerns in Ukraine right now. At Chernobyl, the massive containment structure built over the old reactor was damaged by a drone strike and is slowly degrading, which means it needs repairs to prevent any future radiation leaks, though nothing is leaking at the moment. At the same time, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant temporarily lost all external power, which is dangerous because even shut-down reactors still need constant cooling to remain stable.

This is why Putin needs to be [censored]. There is nothing but evil that comes from that man. We cannot progress as a species with men like Putin enshitifying the entire planet. When will the world end his nonsense?

Totally get why this freaks you out, anything “Chernobyl” instantly sounds apocalyptic. One useful thing is to follow IAEA updates directly, they’re usually quick and pretty sober about risks.

Doesn’t extreme radiation speed up the destruction/aging process of materials?
