Sono andato nella tana del coniglio cercando di capire perché gli spagnoli mangiano così tardi e restano alzati molto più tardi rispetto al resto d’Europa.
Si scopre che non è una questione culturale, è una questione di fuso orario. La Spagna è geograficamente allineata con il Regno Unito e il Portogallo (UTC+0), ma utilizza l’ora dell’Europa centrale (UTC+1) come Francia e Germania.
Perché? Nel 1940 Franco cambiò l’orologio della Spagna per adattarlo alla Germania nazista come gesto politico di allineamento con Hitler. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale nessuno si è mai preso la briga di tornare indietro.
Quindi, quando sono le 22:00 in Spagna, in realtà sono solo le 21:00 al sole. La cena alle 22:00 improvvisamente ha molto più senso.
L’intera storia è affascinante: in realtà nel 2013 c’era una commissione parlamentare che raccomandava di tornare indietro, ma ciò non è mai avvenuto.

All true and great info.
gotta say 9pm is still pretty late, until you count in how damn hot it is until around that time, then these factors combined tells the whole story

If you actually count parallels and not just meridians, turns out we are not actually that far off from central Europe because of Earth’s inclination; so sunrise in winter and sunset in summer are quite aligned with those in central Europe.
We are in the correct timezone in my opinion, we need to align based on latitude, not only longitude.

I don’t like Franco’s legacy, but CEST is an excellent timezone to be in when you work 9 to 18
I don’t agree with this, in Mexico and in Argentina, which are far from being in a wrong time zone or that Hitler Franco BS, they do eat same time as in Spain. Is rather a cultural thing than a timezone thing.
Also, I strongly doubt because of 1h time difference, Spanish people eat 3h later than many of the european countries, does not make sense.
Years ago, still during Franco regime, my granduncle was a witness in some crime case. A Guardia Civil policeman was asking him “At what time that was?” And my granduncle responded “God’s time or Franco’s?”.
