He’s right, social media has become a place for disinformation that directly affects our democracy and how people treat others, it has effected the mental health of kids and adults, it has enabled millions worth of pounds to be stolen from the vulnerable, and I think it has severely damaged communities as people feel more comfortable in their own echo chambers instead of talking to their neighbours and local communities.

I don’t have a solution that will fix it all without other issues, but I know it’s an issue and something we simply can’t ignore.

If someone doesn’t like a website, why do they visit it?

Tech bros purposefully want things to keep going this way, theres not much that can happen from asking them…

They even fund the supposedly “anti social media” campaigns that push for ID checks that they claim they “do not want” because it cripples competition and allows for even more data collection.

there needs to be a worldwide push back against them (and no, not in terms of “you need to give up all rights to anonymity”) but thats not really possible until the US moves away from a government thats effectively bought out by these oligarchs wanting to form their own new form of cyberpunk style dystopian future.

There needs to be laws against them purposefully pushing fascistic works, purposefully pushing systems designed to help build addiction, rage baiting and fake information.

  4. I agree. I think by the end of May Starmer will be gone or at least have announced he is stepping down.

If the Mandelson fuck up and cover up doesn’t get him, the local elections will.

I firmly believe school (as early as possible) should teach internet safety and social media literacy.

This is why the governments a joke now, you shouldn’t need to fill in 500 documents in order for certain laws to pass and take immediate effect. Just ban social media already lol it’s fully of degeneracy and doesn’t help society

According to Beth Rigby, he met with all the tech bosses this week and essentially told them that if they don’t make changes to make things safer for kids, then he will ban them for under 16s.

Which is fair enough to be honest.

I’m not really a fan of blanket bans, but if the tech companies don’t get their act together, then governments inevitably have to step in.

Honestly, I miss the pre-iPhone era. Having to download an app or scan a qr code for a restaurant menu and all the other inconveniences are starting to annoy me immensely
