I personally hate the way you can defect after an election, same goes for co-option. You’re elected as a party candidate or an independent you should have to see out the term with the party.

There’s a gap opening up on the centre-right as the main parties have drifted off to the left. Despite claiming to represent those “who got up early in the morning”, FG in particular have spent a lot of time ignoring them – culminating in a budget last year which actually raised taxes on workers while government spending continued to grow at an unsustainable pace.
I’m not pleased to see Independent Ireland & Aontu etc. filling that gap, but it’ll happen while FG and FF are asleep at the wheel.
