I have not the slightest sympathy for Georgios Grivas, particularly because of his destructive activities with the terrorist organization EOKA B, but the way this article begins with the colonialist logic that I often read from neo-Ottoman Turks of the sort: “What business did the Christians have to revolt, since the Ottoman Administration allowed them to freely practice their religion as long as they paid taxes?” This is one of the most sickening imperialist logics that also led Germany to Nazism and World War II.

I don’t know who the author is and I’m not interested in finding out, but it’s at least sickening that such reasoning is still being repeated today.

This is the narrative of today’s China: since the population is prosperous, what need is there for democracy and public discourse?

This is, for the most part, what illiberal regimes are all about.

The funny thing is this kind of article loves reducing everything to Grivas bad because it lets everyone else wash their hands… Grivas did not invent the Cyprus problem out of thin air, British colonial arrogance created the conditions. Greek nationalism answered with violence and then Turkish nationalism happily jumped in to turn the whole thing into partition including TMT, Ankara control and eventually occupation

      > WHO is this Gen. George Grivas? To Dudley Barker, a good and patriotic Englishman, **who takes Britain’s civilizing mission for granted**

      I stopped reading here.

Grivas got played by the british colonialists because of his far right monolithic fascist nationalistic thinking. So much for a great general lol.
