      My guess is that is means the initials “DS”. Do they somehow match your grandfathers name?

      It could also be R S, with the lower left bit of the R missing.

      Could those be the initials of somebody close, maybe maiden name?

      Thats a signet ring from your grandfather or one of his ancestors with the initials DS

      Besides: thats a very nice piece, when you want to know how old it is, go to a museum or a university with a history faculty. They will be willing to help, normaly. When you ask nicely.
