La cosa interessante è che tra gli azeri la frequenza settimanale al culto è vicina allo 0%, e solo il 38% circa degli azeri considera la religione molto importante nella propria vita. Tuttavia, oltre il 75% degli azeri ha riferito di pregare quotidianamente. Ciò è diverso da qualsiasi altro paese dell’Asia centrale, anche se, come loro, l’Azerbaigian è ostile alle istituzioni religiose. Sebbene questi dati risalgano a poco più di dieci anni fa, credo ancora che siano validi anche oggi.
Un’altra curiosità interessante è che gli azeri sunniti e sciiti sembrano andare più d’accordo tra tutti i paesi con una popolazione sciita e sunnita divisa. Inoltre, l’idea che i sunniti siano più religiosi degli sciiti (almeno in Azerbaigian) non è confermata come vera in nessun risultato del sondaggio, anche se, ancora una volta, i dati raccolti qui risalgono a parecchio tempo fa (2013). Invece, questa nozione potrebbe essere solo uno stereotipo dei sunniti del Caucaso settentrionale e del Daghestan.
TLDR: La religione è generalmente una questione privata (e non comunitaria) per la maggior parte degli azeri, e una grande differenza nella religiosità tra sunniti e sciiti in Azerbaigian non è osservata nei dati raccolti attraverso i sondaggi condotti dal Pew Research Center.

While most of these stats are more or less correct, the 2nd picture has flawed methodology. It assumes that 75% of Azerbaijanis engage in “daily religious worship”, yet only 21% of Azerbaijanis pray daily according to the same data. That means the question asked by pollsters was incorrect and Azerbaijanis probably understood it as “are you religious every day”?

This “least religious” country narrative is mostly an unsubstantiated gimmick that has been going around for years. When your government can label you as a radical whenever they want to jail you, people are obviously going to be more private about their beliefs.
As for the low attendance at religious services, women are far less likely to attend them. I checked the methodology, and the azerbaijani survey sample was heavily skewed toward women. On top of that, the survey was conducted in both Azerbaijani and Russian. Rus sector women are not representative of the religious attitudes of the Azerbaijani majority. That’s why the numbers are so low compared to others.
