I fully support Ukraine in the defence of their nation and believe the EU and others should support them, but that doesn’t mean opening up EU membership to a country which currently couldn’t meet the criteria.

What else should be offered?

There are criteria that have to be fulfilled to join the EU.

Quite simply nothing. If they dont manage to meet the criteria they wont get in and if this never happens they should never join. Ukraine as a country is already fucked for the next few decades no matter how this war will end and will be a burden for the rest of the EU.

As other stated – nothing. They need to fight their corruption, obey our laws, and so on.

Nothing. Without abolishment of veto rights enlargment of EU is suicide.

Post-war guarantees and assurances to invest both money and know-how in order to fast track Ukraine into a country that meets the entry criteria. They deserve their chance asap, however it should not be done by bypassing primary requirements. So this would give them a shot to in a reasonable time frame not decades, but it’s still their shot to make.

Have some talks, take a break, and offer it again. You can not expect 100% rational decisions 100% of the time from people who are fighting for their lives in a war they didn’t start. So chill and hold the door open.

We should counter-offer a “Bye”. We’ve given millions to one of the most, if not THE most corrupt country in Europe. All in the name of “protecting Europe from a Russian invasion”.

Ukraine needs help and I’m all for that, but that doesn’t mean they get a quick-pass into the EU. Ukraine needs a major reform in order for it to even be close to a membership request into the EU.

I wish for Ukraine to become a full EU member state, but Ukraine must meet the same criteria as any other prospecting country.
There can be no leeway, especially not in terms of corruption tolerance. The corruption has to end!

Nothing. The fact that they’re in a war is not a get into the EU for free card. The EU has standards and the EU has criterias. Untill those are met Ukraine can’t join the EU.

I fully support Ukraine. At the same time, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia have all at some point caused challenges for the EU including in some ways with aiding Ukraine. Seeing how Ukraine handles a few election cycles once they start voting again might be reasonable before handing them a EU veto.

The Netherlands is already providing enormous support in the form of military equipment, financial aid and the provision of shelter for women, children and men in urgent need of specialist medical care. But supporting yet another impoverished country with a population of 40 million is simply not feasible.
So it’s this or nothing, and even then Ukraine is already receiving far more than other candidate member states.
Moreover, there is also the result of the EU referendum on Ukraine. That clearly states that they would not become members.

This clearly isn’t working. Ucraine simply cannot enter EU while on an active conflict, and has a long way ahead to meet the standards needed to even be considered for “standard” membership. This solution, albeit a compromise, would be an unicum given the context, and would set up a precedent

Nothing. More support to kick out the Russians once and for all, security guarantees to keep them out, and then once Ukraine fulfills the criteria they may join like anybody else. 

Okay, then they need to meet all the requirements like everyone else. We should not offer them anything else. I want them in the EU, but if they are only happy with a full membership, then they should also work towards meeting every condition for it. No compromises.

Great manipulation in the headline. Ukraine was given a bad deal to appease ruskies, Ukraine has refused. The “what should EU offer instead?” is not a part of that conversation. EU should not offer anything instead, and Ukraine does not demand anything instead. Ukraine will join EU, with the rights of full membership, after meeting the criteria.

This is a vile deception and nothing more. As usual, there are no officials in the EU with the balls to either accept Ukraine into the EU or tell it that EU membership is impossible in the coming decades. Instead, for the second decade now, Ukraine has been fed false promises. Who benefits from this? Ukrainians, or perhaps the people of the EU? This is simply cowardice. Cowardice and an inability to call a spade a spade. It’s like a Ukrainian an Russia war that has been going on for years, but the participating countries avoid calling it a war.
