Gambling is having a devastating effect on far too many individuals, families and communities across Ireland. The ease of access to online betting and prediction markets only increases the risk of addiction and financial hardship. Strong regulation and enforcement are essential to protect vulnerable people, especially young adults, from an industry that often profits from harm. This is a positive step, and I hope it is followed by even stronger measures to reduce gambling related harm across the country.
good
“Prediction markets” like Polymarket and Kalshi are absolutely just gambling websites that are trying their very best (with help from Donald Trump Jr) to not be called gambling/sportsbooks.
If you ever see interviews with their CFO’s, CTOs, CEOs etc, these people are honestly a bit stomach churning. They talk about how everything should be monetized and they pray on peoples desperation and economic uncertainty.
Dabbled a bit in prediction markets..
They can be dangerous for problem gamblers. No such thing as deposit limits, Self exclusion etc. No kyc either. Also can bet as much as you like.
With polymarket insider trading is almost encouraged.
The Irish solution of ban or block everything.
Prediction markets are far more fair than any regulated gambling company in Ireland.
The other one they should be worried about with is Stake and their marketing strategies, paying streamers outrageous sums to play and promote it on their streaming site Kick to get young lads interested in it
Would goes blocking actually do anything to stop it?
Suppose if every country did the same.
There should be no online gambling. End of
If they are not compliant and have no intention of applying with regulation then I can see that the regulator, under its mandate has to act and so it should.
Regulator is going to have a tough time achieving a perfectly compliant space.
Between crypto, VPN, the ability for non technical people to vibe code a betting platform in a couple of days, freely available open source betting platforms that reasonably competent technical people can clone and deploy the regulator and the wider public need to get reel about what is possible.
If the regulator goes with the UKGC model of a highly complex and technical licensing process then it’s going to create a flourishing black market and none of the great things that the regulator can do to promote public health will have any real impact.
Don’t tax the shit out of those who want operate in the space and don’t create complex/ambigious licensing requirements. Make it easy, get everyone through the licensing process and help them with building out the public health tooling like centralising self exclusion etc.
Oh no a geo-block that will show them. No possible way of getting around that
Fuck gambling
Ohhhh I hope this is not a threat. It needs to be followed through on.
Joke. Most crypto markets in Europe are “regulated” by the Central Bank of Ireland.

they can’t exist when this is what they’re betting on.
everyone is corrupt and money is all that matters now in this fucked up world but incentivising folk to go out and start fires is speed running to that inevitable doom up the path
As an American let me give you all fair warning that these bastards are owned by Trump’s own family. This is a major inside-dealing scandal that should have everyone in an uproar (if half the US wasn’t developmentally disabled and morally bankrupt). Prediction markets are gambling without any regulation or controls. Kill it quickly….
