I mean he is disputing that he fought for Al-Qaeda, he’s probably lying but it is a bit scummy to make the headline as if it’s already a given that he fought for Al-Qaeda when that’s what the challenge is about

He fights for Al-Nusra, gets called a terrorist and banned from returning home
The former Al Qeada affiliate Sufyan Mustafa fought for was Jabhat al-Nusra (the Nusra Front). It became an Al Qeada affiliate [for several years](https://icct.nl/publication/jabhat-al-nusra-splits-al-qaeda) after they split with Islamic State in Iraq / ISIS.
Jabhat al-Nusra was founded by Muhammad al-Juliani in late 2011 (al-Juliani was his fighting name, his real name is Ahmed al-Sharaa). Al Juliani was sent to Syria in the opening months of the Syrian civil war by Muhammad al Baghdadi, the leader of Islamic State in Iraq, who later became the leader (Caliph) of ISIS. Islamic State split with Jabhat al-Nusra in 2013-14. Jabhat al-Nusra affiliation with Al Qeada was Al-Juliani way of seperating the group from from ISIS.
Jabhat al-Nusra later renamed themselves Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), amd dropped their al Qeada affiliation, an attempt to appear moderate. They also underwent several mergers with other rebel factions. HTS also fought against and expelled from their territory, dozens of rebel groups that didn’t “bend the knee”. These expelled “moderate” Free Syrian Army factions aligned themselves with Turkey, and became the Turkish (backed) Free Syrian Army (TFSA). The TFSA did the dirty work of ethnically cleansing Syrian Kurds from several border regions with Turkish backing (but that’s a story for another day).
As far as I’m concerned, Muhammad Al Juliani/Ahmed al-Sharaa was one of the best tactical commanders in history. This is not an endorsement of al-Shara’s politics at all, just a narrow acknowledgement of his tactical and strategic decision making, him as a statesman.
Don’t mistake what I wrote for a defence of Sufyan Mustafa, Abu Hamza’s son. What I am highlighting is how the US, Russia, *and indeed the UK*, have no quams doing business with literal Jihadists if it suits them.

This is one of the 8 children who was brought up in a £1.25m council house Abu Hamza was given in Hammersmith and Fulham, while operating as a well known terrorist. The house which has had tens of thousands of pounds spent on it from taxpayer funds for renovations.
Here’s another of Hamza’s children, from wikipedia:
> Hamza’s Moroccan daughter-in-law was jailed for attempting to smuggle a mobile phone sim card when visiting him in Belmarsh prison in 2012. She is now facing deportation but because she is the sole carer of her son, a British national, the European Court of Justice’s advocate general has ruled she cannot automatically be deported despite her criminality unless she is deemed to pose a ‘serious’ threat to society.
Great job everyone. Real round of applause for our elite class and how well they’re running the country.

HTS and other affiliate rebel factions defeated the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, and are the current [Syrian transitional government](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_transitional_government).

Here’s Ahmed al-Sharaa [meeting Donald Trump last year](https://www.ispionline.it/en/publication/syria-a-former-jihadist-in-washington-what-to-know-about-the-trump-al-sharaa-meeting-223137).
[Al-Sharaa also met Vadmir Putin](https://english.alarabiya.net/News/middle-east/2026/01/28/syria-s-alsharaa-to-meet-putin-as-russia-seeks-deal-on-military-bases), who wanted to kill al-Sharaa hardly a year before their meeting.
