Costs of doing business
I bet these costs are built into the business model.
They’re trying to kill aliexpress and honestly that’s a terrible choice. Not too long ago they added duty fees to all products bought outside of the EU, now they’re discouraging the company itself to keep operating at all, next they will outright ban them from the market.
And the price falls upon consumers, the same goods you find on aliexpress for a couple of euro cost 20 from dropshippers on “”””EUROPEAN””””” marketplaces like amazon, ebay, supermarkets etc…
to all the downvoters, I dont want to pay 20 bucks for a replacement cable for my headphones that costs 2, thanks. Wasnt the EU supposed to protect the right to repair? Seems to me they’re forcing me to just throw the headphones in the garbage and buy new ones.
also when trump does this you’re all making fun of him, when the EU does it suddenly it’s time to worship them and blindly nod your heads.
Or about 0.46% of their parent company’s annual revenue….
This is just the cost of doing business for these companies and while they might fight it because no fine is still better than a €550 mil one, they can just laugh it off even if they have to pay it in full.
As if anyone expected their AliExpress Dior pouch or whatever to be original 😂
Will they also fine Jeff Bezos for all the illegal and fake goods I can buy with next-day delivery on Amazon?

I bought a soldering Iron off there a couple of weeks ago that wasn’t legal for the UK Market.
Seems pretty after the fact, get a nice influx of money from the fine vs stopping it early. As a former EU gov employee, we really do love the press release that are doing something

I’m with Aliexpress on this one. The EU’s actions seem arbitrary and disproportionate.
You can find improper content on any large platform if you look hard enough. I personally have not come across counterfeit or seemingly dangerous goods on Aliexpress in a while (granted, I mostly shop for electronics). The EU did not seem to evaluate the number of listings that Aliexpress blocked or removed promptly, the percentage of prohibited listings versus total listings, or whether each listing on an indvidual level was indeed prohibited.
The EU’s announcement focused on the number of Aliexpress users as an apparent reason for the investigation but there nothing quantifying the harm.
Here the EU is basically saying, “We don’t care how much you brushed your teeth, we just don’t like you and it looks like you still missed a few spots.”
Great! Now I’d like the same thing for Amazon.

Question; the EU loves to dish out these massive fines to tech companies and retailers.
How are they doing with actually **collecting** on that money? Are there any stats on that? Anyone have some hard data on this?
I have bought several things knowing they weren’t official. Official as in products that use the license without permission, but wouldn’t even exist officially (Pokémon carpets, Digimon curtains, mang and anime chair covers and so on). Products that I find pretty fun and order when I see them, I usually do get a warning from AliExpress like a month or so that the product I bought may not be official, but that’s something obvious to begin with (this is something that also happens in small local stores, some of the Toys they have are not official merchandise for example).
It’s unusual to see AliExpress be a problem though it’s not unjustified, there is a lot of dubious nonsense on it. However it’s still the most legitimate of the Chinese factory direct sellers. They don’t sell data like Temu do for example.
